SUMMARY:Chuck Prophet and His Cumbia Shoes
DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presents \nChuck Prophet and His Cumbia Shoes \nSunday\, July 20\, 2025 4pm \n$30.00 + Fees 2pm Doors \n \n  \n \n  \nWhen a stage four lymphoma diagnosis forced him off the road and into the hospital\, Chuck\nProphet didn’t know if he’d live long enough to see the end of the year\, let alone get back on\ntour.\n“I was going through a tunnel\,” he recalls. “It was dark. But I had music: music to play\, music\nto listen to\, music to get me out of my head. Music was my savior.”\nThat much is plain to hear on Wake The Dead\, Prophet’s extraordinary new album. Recorded\nwith band of brothers ¿Qiensave?\, the collection explores the world of Cumbia music\, which\nconsumed and comforted Prophet during his illness and subsequent recovery. The songs are\nintoxicatingly rhythmic\, all but demanding you move your body\, with arrangements that blur\nthe lines between tradition and innovation. There are flashes of rock and roll\, punk\, surf\, and\nsoul\, all filtered through the streets of San Francisco and wrapped up in the rich legacy of a\ngenre that traces its roots back to the jungles of South America.\nCaptured live in the studio\, Wake The Dead resumes Prophet’s streak of more than a dozen\ncritically acclaimed solo albums stretching all the way back to 1990\, when the California\nnative first shifted focus from pioneering neo-psych band Green on Red to working under his\nown name. Since then\, Prophet—who’s now in full remission—has earned raves everywhere\nfrom Rolling Stone to NPR\, landed songs in a slew of films and television shows\, and seen his\nwork covered by Bruce Springsteen\, Solomon Burke\, and Heart\, among others.

SUMMARY:Jim Lauderdale
DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presents \nJim Lauderdale \nThursday\, July 17\, 2025 7pm \n$25.00 \n \n  \n \n“Jim Lauderdale is a consummate entertainer\, a sharp dressed man as well\, a terrific songwriter and a great singer.”– George Strait \n\n\n\n\n“He’s my favorite part of Americana music” – Ketch Secor\, Old Crow Medicine Show \n“He’s a man of great style\, an exceptional songwriter and tremendous singer” – Elvis Costello \n“Jim Lauderdale could easily be called a renaissance man. He’s a great singer\, great guitar player and there’s no way you could miss his work as a songwriter.” – Ricky Skaggs \n\nAt any given time\, you’re likely to find Jim Lauderdale making music\, whether he’s laying down a new track in the studio or working through a spontaneous melody at his home in Nashville. And if he’s not actively crafting new music\, he’s certainly thinking about it. “It’s a constant challenge to try to keep making better and better records\, write better and better songs. I still always feel like I’m a developing artist\,” he says. This may be a surprising sentiment from a man who’s won two Grammys\, released 34 full-length albums\, and taken home the Americana Music Association’s coveted Wagonmaster Award. But forthcoming album Game Changer is convincing evidence that the North Carolina native is only continuing to hone his craft. \n\nOperating under his own label\, Sky Crunch Records\, for the first time since 2016\, Lauderdale recorded Game Changer at the renowned Blackbird Studios in Nashville\, co-producing the release with Jay Weaver and pulling from songs he’d written over the last several years. “There’s a mixture on this record of uplifting songs and\, at the same time\, songs of heartbreak and despair—because that’s part of life as well\,” he says. “In the country song world especially\, that’s always been part of it. That’s real life.” \n\nLauderdale would know: He’s been a vital part of the country music ecosystem since 1991\, when he released his debut album and began penning songs for an impressively long roster of country music greats. “When I was a teenager wanting to be a bluegrass banjo player\, I never would have imagined that I would get to work with people like Ralph Stanley\, Robert Hunter\, Loretta Lynn\, George Jones\, Emmylou Harris\, Elvis Costello\, Lucinda Williams and John Oates \,” he muses. “Getting to work with them inspires me greatly to this day\, and I know it always will.” \,” he muses. “Getting to work with them inspires me greatly to this day\, and I know it always will.” \n\nFrom rollicking guitar riffs on “That Kind of Life (That Kind of Day)” to the slow\, sweet harmonies of “I’ll Keep My Heart Open For You\,” Game Changer shows off Lauderdale’s ingenuity as a singer\, songwriter\, and producer—while reestablishing him as one of Americana’s most steadfast champions. “Country music is constantly evolving\, but I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for steel guitar and a Telecaster\,” he says. “I have done my job on this record if people who love classic country feel like they can put it on\, or have it in their collection\, and it would fit right in.” \n\nRespecting the past doesn’t mean he’s not breaking new ground. “We’re All We’ve Got\,” a co-write with Mary Gauthier and Jaimee Harris\, offers a timely message about healing torn relationships at home and across the world. And “Friends Again\,” a grinning number about rekindling a friendship\, is fresh and forward-looking. At every turn\, Lauderdale’s collaborative spirit and genuine love for the creative process reveal themselves in thoughtful\, well-crafted songs sure to stand the test of time. “When everything works right\, it’s just magical to be able to hear them back\,” he says. “You feel\, at least for those three-and-a-half minutes\, like life makes sense.”

SUMMARY:Clare Maloney & The Great Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presents \nClare Maloney & The Great Adventure \nwsg \nSunday\, July 13\, 2025 4pm $15.00 \n \n  \n New York-based rock & roll quartet Clare Maloney & The Great Adventure are pushing out past the safe waters of their harbor and into the great unknown of the open ocean on their sophomore record. Flood\, Fire & Honey takes the band and the listener on an electric rock odyssey where they encounter tremendous floods\, fires and disorienting rearrangements\, and find themselves asking the big existential questions.  On the lead single and album opener\, “The Flood” (released May 15\, 2025)\,  Maloney’s powerhouse\, opera-trained vocals soar alongside an improvised vocal and guitar duet and a thundering rock sound.  Recorded live in one take\, the song sets the stage for the album’s sweeping tale of survival and renewal. \n Born from a long dark night of the soul\, Maloney reveals that Flood\, Fire & Honey was inspired by her struggles with depression and self reckoning. “Floods and fires became powerful metaphors for the internal storms I was facing\,” she shares. “They mirrored the destruction of everything I thought I knew about myself—and the painful but necessary process of sifting through the wreckage to understand what was worth rebuilding. The songs on this album became my way of expressing and making sense of that chaos\, of finding beauty in the breakdown\, and of charting a path to being a better\, stronger\, and more compassionate person.” \nSince their first album (Daybreaker\, 2022)\, the band has grown together. They wanted Flood\, Fire\, and Honey to convey this\, so they booked five consecutive days at a studio\, rented the apartment upstairs\, and resolved to get everything (including two unfinished songs) recorded in that time. Isolated and working on a short deadline\, the bandmates relied on each other for every aspect of the process. They brought prowess on their chosen devices: Clare Maloney and Nate De Brine on vocals and guitar; Caleb Estey on drums and vocals; and Russell Gottlieb on bass and banjos. Beyond that\, they brought knowledge and determination\, keeping an inner ear on the big picture and an outer ear on the fine details\, and stayed devoted to the underlying emotional current of the art.  When it came time to hit record\, the band decided to record everything live to capture the magic of their live performance and the raw intensity of the new songs.  The result is a thrilling five song concept album that traces the arc of the hero’s journey from the time the hero is faced with a devastating set back to their ultimate and triumphant return home\, beaten but not defeated\, worn but wiser. \nThe foursome developed their spellbinding live sound over the last few years by becoming a force on the touring circuit\, playing 250+ shows and opening for legends like Pat Benatar\, Los Lobos\, The Wailers\, and Kevin Bacon’s Bacon Brothers\, Donna the Buffalo\, Bailen and more.  They will be releasing each song from Flood\, Fire & Honey throughout the summer of 2025\, one song at a time until the full album is out in fall 2025.

It is work that has earned him fans like noted author\nand Elvis Presley biographer Peter Guralnick; New West Records artist Buddy Miller;\njournalist\, songwriter\, and Country Music Hall of Fame staffer Peter Cooper; Todd\nSnider; head of the Americana Music Association Jed Hilly; and Lucinda Williams\, with\nwhom Kevin dueted on the song “Down To The Well” (which was featured prominently on\nan Oxford American compilation). \n  \nBefore you even hear his vivid lyrics\, you start feeling the sound of that ’56 Gibson ES-\n125 tuned down to open D\, often with the tremolo flowing like a river\, and an\nunstoppable groove distilled from swamp blues and Sun Records. His MFA from the\nUniversity of Iowa Writers’ Workshop allows him to capture it with a degree of precision. As the New\nYork Times put it in its headline of a feature on Kevin\, “A Musician Or A Poet? Yes to\nBoth.” \n  \nKevin sums it up\, “There are so many stories in north Louisiana and it’s a place that\nnobody pays attention to. For me\, you can feel the arc of time passing there. I’m captivated by\nthe power of strong memories—those films that run continuously in your mind\, if you let\n‘em.” With “Tilt and Shine\,” those movies translate into rock n’roll poetry. \n

SUMMARY:Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder - Sportsmens Park
DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presents \nRicky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder \nSunday\, June 8\, 2025 6pm\, Gates 4pm \n$60.00 \nRine Or Shine Event Bring a chair. \n \nRicky Skaggs \nFifteen-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Ricky Skaggs’ career is easily among the most significant in recent country music history. If Skaggs’ burgeoning trophy case full of awards wasn’t already enough evidence of that fact\, consider that legendary guitarist Chet Atkins once credited Skaggs with “single-handedly saving country music.” His life’s path has taken him to various musical genres\, from where it all began in bluegrass music\, to striking out on new musical journeys\, while still leaving his musical roots intact. \n\n\nBorn July 18\, 1954 in Cordell\, Kentucky\, Skaggs showed signs of future\nstardom at an early age\, playing mandolin on stage with bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe at 6 and appearing on TV with Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs at 7. He emerged as a professional bluegrass musician in 1971\, when he and his friend Keith Whitley were invited to join the legendary Ralph Stanley’s band the Clinch Mountain Boys.Skaggs then went on to record and perform with progressive bluegrass acts like the Country Gentlemen and J.D. Crowe & the New South\, whose self-titled 1975 Rounder Records debut album was instantly recognized as a landmark bluegrass achievement. He then led Boone Creek\, which also featured Dobro ace and fellow New South alumnus Jerry Douglas. \nBut Skaggs turned to the more mainstream country music genre in the late ‘70s when he joined Emmylou Harris’s Hot Band\, replacing Rodney Crowell. He became a recording artist in his own right in 1981 when his Epic label debut album Waitin’ for the Sun to Shine topped the country charts and yielded a pair of #1 hits. Overall\, his productive stay at Epic Records would result in a total of 12 #1 hits. Additionally\, he garnered eight Country Music Association Awards–including the coveted Entertainer of the Year trophy in 1985. \nSkaggs\, of course\, fit right in with young “new-traditionalist” ‘80s artists like Randy Travis\, and helped rejuvenate the country music genre after the worn-out “Urban Cowboy” period. But\, Skaggs put his own stamp on the country format by infusing his bluegrass and traditional country music roots into the contemporary Nashville sound. \nSkaggs’ 1997 album Bluegrass Rules!\, released on his newly-formed Skaggs Family Records label\, marked a triumphant return to bluegrass—which he’s solidified ever since with a series of GRAMMY® Award winning albums\, recorded with his amazing bluegrass band\, Kentucky Thunder (8-time winners of the IBMA ‘Instrumental Group of the Year’). Skaggs’ label has also served as a home for similar bluegrass and roots music-oriented artists including The Whites. \nIn the past decade\, he has been honored with inductions into the Gospel Music Association’s Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Musicians Hall of Fame. In 2018\, a landmark year\, Skaggs was also awarded membership into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame\, the IBMA Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and country music’s greatest honor\, the Country Music Hall of Fame. Most recently\, he was awarded the prestigious National Medal of Arts in 2020 for his contributions to the American music industry. \nRicky struck his first chords on a mandolin over 60 years ago\, and he continues to do his part to lead the recent roots revival in music. Clearly his passion for it puts him in the position to bring his lively\, distinctively American form of music out of isolation and into the ears and hearts of audiences across the country and around the world. Ricky Skaggs is always forging ahead with cross-cultural\, genre-bending musical ideas and inspirations.

SUMMARY:Danielle Nicole Band - Sportsmens Tavern
DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presents \nDanielle Nicole \nFriday\, April 25\, 2025 8pm\, 6pm Doors \n$20 \n“That girl gets down to the nitty gritty.” Koko Taylor  \nDanielle Nicole\, singer\, bassist and songwriter hailing from Kansas City\, Missouri\, has spent her life making music and pleasing fans\, domestically and abroad. Nicole was initially influenced by her parents playing in bands and working around the KC music scene. She recalls seeing her father playing blues guitar and her mother singing with the group Little Eva and The Works and it set off a switch. With her two brothers\, Nick and Kris\, they formed the “Heavy Blues” band Trampled Under Foot\, which found initial popularity in the Midwest\, then exploded worldwide for over 10 years.  \nThere has been no shortage of praise; Guitar World stated\, “Danielle Nicole has won respect and admiration throughout the American blues scene for her soulful\, inventive playing and tireless work ethic.” Blues Music Magazine effused\, “Nicole brings it\, bakes it\, and serves it up blazing on a silver soul-rocking platter.” The Kansas City Star declared\, “Blues and soul vocalists tend to improve as they age. Bettye LaVette is among the artists who became increasingly believable as she matured. Danielle Nicole appears to be following in her footsteps.”\nDanielle embarked on her solo career with Wolf Den (2015)\, which peaked at #2 on the Billboard Blues charts and amassed 7.5 million Spotify streams. Cry No More (2018) followed\, the record was nominated for a Grammy in the contemporary blues category and debuted at number one in the Billboard Blues Charts – it also boasts over Spotify streams in excess of 10 million. The Love You Bleed(2024) has amassed over 1.2 MILLION streams in the less than a year since its release on Forty Below Records. After receiving 8 Blues Music Awards over her career for Bass Player and Female Contemporary Artist of the Year Nicole is just getting warmed up.

SUMMARY:Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root with Dirk Miller w/David Miller Doors 7pm
DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens Tavern \nMichael Glabicki of Rusted Root with Dirk Miller \nFriday\, April 18\, 2025 9pm $25.00 + Online fee \nIt was30+years ago that Michael Glabicki dropped out of college to start a band. At that timehe had no idea what he was going to do or how to get there. Glabickispent two years learninghow to write songs\, and create a vision. Rusted Root was then born. The multi-platinum band out of Pittsburgh\, evolved around front-man Michael Glabicki’sdistinct sound and grew into a musical entity that has thrived in a non-genre specific categoryall its own. Rusted Root built their career around dramatic performances; their polyrhythmic\,multicultural rock-and-soul picked up fans like a junkyard magnet as they swept across thenation on tour.In many ways Glabicki is starting this process all over again. He is challenging himself to write incompletely new and different ways to create an entirely new sound landscape.Michael takesall the new songs and old favorites Rusted Root has been performing\, and performs re-envisionedversions of them in a more intimate setting with Rusted Root’s long time guitarplayer and background vocalist\, Dirk Miller.A multifaceted musician\, producer and songwriter\, Glabicki’s talents are unique and extremelyuplifting. His solo tour dates andnew music are extensions of his creative talent\, and willinspire all those who participate.

SUMMARY:Yarn - Sportsmens Tavern
DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presents \n \nWednesday\, April 16\, 2025 7pm $20 + online fee or $20 at the door \nYou might expect a band that calls itself Yarn to\, naturally\, tend to spin a yarn or two. “That’s what we do\, we tell stories\, live and in the studio\, truth and fiction”\,singer/songwriter Blake Christiana insists. “We don’t always opt for consistency. There’s a different vibe onstage from what comes through in our recordings. There’s a difference in every show as well\, you never know what you’re going to get.” \nYarn’s ability to persevere ought to come as no great surprise\, especially for a band that spent two years honing their chops during a Monday night residency at the famed Kenny’s Castaway in New York’s Greenwich Village. In effect\, it allowed them to rehearse onstage\, mostly in front of audiences that often ranged in size from five to a hundred people on any given night. 10 studio albums followed — Yarn (2007)\, Empty Pockets (2008)\, Leftovers Part One (2009)\, Come On In (2010)\, Leftovers Part 2 (2011)\, Almost Home (2012)\, Shine the Light On (2013)\, This Is The Year (2016)\, and Lucky 13 parts 1 & 2 (2019). The band then took to the road\, playing upwards of 170 shows a year and sharing stages with such superstars as Dwight Yoakam\, Charlie Daniels\,  Railroad Earth\, Marty Stuart\, Allison Krauss\, Leon Russell\, Jim Lauderdale\, Leftover Salmon\, Amos Lee\, The Lumineers and many more. They performed at any number of prestigious venues — Mountain Stage\, Daytrotter\, the Orange Peel in Asheville\, the Fox Theater in Boulder\, the 9:30 Club in D.C\, South by Southwest\, the Strawberry Festival\, Rhythm and Roots\, Meadowgrass\, Floydfest and so much more\, eventually surpassing 1\,000 shows\, half a million miles and performances in nearly every state. They’ve driven nonstop\, made countless radio station appearances\, driven broken-down RVs and watched as their van caught fire. They’ve paid their dues and then some\, looking forward even as they were forced to glance behind. \nIndeed\, the accolades piled up quickly along the way. They have landed on the Grammy ballot 4 times\, garnered nods from the Americana Music Association\, placed top five on both Radio and Records and the AMA album charts\, garnered airplay on Sirius XM\, iTunes\, Pandora\, CNN\, and CMT\, been streamed millions of times on Spotify\, Apple Music\, and Amazon\, and also accorded the “Download of the Day” from Rolling Stone. Shine the Light On found shared songwriting credits with John Oates (the Oates of Hall & Oates fame)\, and when audiences expressed their admiration\, it brought the band a populist cult following of diehard devotees\, popularly known as “the Yarmy.” \nIt’s proof positive that the Brooklyn and Raleigh based band have made their mark\, and in dealing with their emotions\, scars and circumstances\, they find themselves in a position to share those experiences with others who have juggled similar sentiments. \nAs Yarn look forward to their next 2 studio releases in 2023\, Blake looks to establish himself more as the songwriter he’s always been\, and not the pseudo bluegrass band\, bar band or jam band\, that Yarn often gets immediately lumped into.  Although all those elements of music exist in the Yarn catalogue and their live performances\, Blake’s number one priority is and always has been “the song”.  These next 2 releases are without a doubt Blake’s most personal\, polished\, and best of Yarn’s career so far. \nThe beginning of the journey to these 2 albums began around April of 2022 when Blake booked a solo show at The Down Home in Johnson City\, TN (a nod to Townes Van Zandt’s 1986 live show there and ultimate release) with the intention of making a live record.  But he wanted it to be songs none of the fans and attendees had ever heard before. The problem was he hadn’t written most of them yet.  He was at his crossroads\, uninspired\, bored\, exhausted and fairly insecure about his entire career up to that point. But he got to work\, and got more inspired with each new song he wrote.  These songs all tell a story individually but they also tell a story as a whole\, a songwriter and musician ready to dive deeper into the music and the art for a greater result that he believes most anyone can appreciate\, relate to and enjoy.
