DESCRIPTION:The Cave presents \nSmokey Brights  \nw/Ormolu \nSaturday\, November 8\, 2025 $10.00 \n7pm Doors/ 8pm Showtime \n \n \nThe first composite solid rocket fuel that eventually launched spaceships was made with asphalt\, effectively paving the way to the moon. Dashboard Heat\, the newest record by Seattle stalwarts Smokey Brights\, embodies this funny little fact\, using tough truths to slip the surly bonds of earth and\, through hardship\, touch the stars. Members Kim West (vocals/keys)\, Ryan Devlin (vocals/guitars)\, Luke Ragnar (bass/vocals)\, and Nick Krivchenia (drums) have crafted a ramshackle rocket of a record that touches upon cars\, celestial forces\, childhood homes\, light and hope\, darkness and grief. Produced by Andy D. Park in exchange for Ryan painting his recording studio\, the album sees the band sonically shooting for the solar system while staying true to their grounded take on songcraft that has made them a mainstay of the Northwest scene. \n  \nThe group released their first LP\, Taste For Blood\, in 2014\, followed it up with Hot Candy in 2016\, I Love You But Damn in 2020\, and Levitator in 2023\, with a constellation of EPs and singles sprinkled in between. While each successive release has garnered Smokey Brights more acclaim and attention – the Levitator LP and the Broken Too EP were ranked #50 and#81 respectively on KEXP’s Best of 2023 list – perhaps more important are the opportunities that have appeared as if by some musical magic. The group has four songs on the hit indie game Pacific Drive and recently recorded the soundtrack for the NPR podcast Let the Kids Dance! Along the way\, they’ve racked up thousands of miles\, both corporeal and cosmic\, playing hundreds of shows locally\, nationally\, and internationally. \n  \nSmokey Brights have no intention of slowing down for the release of their fifth LP\, Dashboard Heat. Their music video for “All in Who You Know\,” directed by frequent collaborator Travis Trautt\, features the band fresh off a performance at the Moscow Ren Faire\, engaged in an epic quest for a mythical object of dazzling power. Recently\, they filmed a stripped-down\, sold-out two-night stand at Seattle’s Rabbit Box Theater\,  debuting the new record in its entirety. Even the physical record of Dashboard Heat is ambitious\, stretching the terrene boundaries of vinyl into the celestial. The cover art from Brazilian surrealist illustrator Bruno Cesar features an Easter Egg for every song on the record\, while the accompanying lyrical comic book sees Cesar sending the band on a trip through the silver age stars. Smokey Brights will be supporting all this astral ambition with terrestrial touring\, hitting both coasts\, the Southwest and the Northwest in fall 2025.

His most recent release\, 2017’s Upland Stories\, earned year’s-best recognition from NPR and Rolling Stone among many others\, as well as two Grammy® nominations\, for folk album and American roots song (“Alabama At Night”). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFulks was born in York\, Pennsylvania\, and grew up in a half-dozen small towns in southeast Pennsylvania\, the North Carolina Piedmont\, and the Blue Ridge area of Virginia. He learned guitar from his dad\, banjo from Earl Scruggs and John Hartford records\, and fiddle (long since laid down in disgrace) on his own. He attended Columbia College in New York City in 1980 and dropped out in 1982 to focus on the Greenwich Village songwriter scene and other ill-advised pursuits. \nIn 1983 he moved to Chicago and joined Greg Cahill’s Special Consensus Bluegrass Band. He taught music at Old Town School of Folk Music from 1984 to 1996\, and worked as a staff songwriter on Music Row in Nashville from 1993 to 1998. His early solo work — Country Love Songs (1996) and South Mouth (1997) — helped define the “alternative country” movement of the 1990s. His music from the last several years hews mainly to acoustic instrumentation; it returns him in part to his earlier bluegrass days\, and extends the boundaries of that tradition with old-time rambles and sparely orchestrated reflections on love\, the slings of time\, and the troubles of common people. \nRadio: multiple appearances on WSM’s “Grand Ole Opry”; PRI’s “Whadd’ya Know”; NPR’s “Fresh Air\,” “Mountain Stage\,” and “World Cafe”; and the syndicated “Acoustic Cafe” and “Laura Ingraham Show.” TV: PBS’s Austin City Limits; NBC’s Today\, Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, Later with Carson Daly\, and 30 Rock. From 2004 to 2008 he hosted an hourlong performance/interview program for XM satellite radio\, “Robbie’s Secret Country.” Artists who have covered his songs include Sam Bush\, Kelly Hogan\, Andrew Bird\, Mollie O’Brien\, Rosie Flores\, John Cowan\, and Old 97s. \nRobbie’s writing on music and life have appeared in GQ\, Blender\, the Chicago Reader\, DaCapo Press’s Best Music Writing anthologies for 2001 and 2004\,  Amplified: Fiction from Leading Alt-Country\, Indie Rock\, Blues and Folk Musicians\, and A Guitar and A Pen: Stories by Country Music’s Greatest Songwriters. As an instrumentalist\, he has accompanied the Irish fiddle master Liz Carroll\, the distinguished jazz violinist Jenny Scheinman\, and the New Orleans pianist Dr. John. As a producer his credits include Touch My Heart: A Tribute to Johnny Paycheck (Sugar Hill\, 2004) and Big Thinkin’ by Dallas Wayne (Hightone\, 2000). Theatrical credits include “Woody Guthrie’s American Song” and Harry Chapin’s “Cottonpatch Gospel.”  He served twice as judge for the Winfield National Flatpicking Guitar competition. This tight-knit group of musicians weaves together the soulful sounds of blues\, the infectious rhythms of funk and soul\, and the electrifying energy of rock’n’roll\, creating a sonic experience that had them named “Band of the Year” (Aquarian\, 2020). \n​ \nAt the core of The Outcrops are the dynamic duo of Bryan Schroeder and Cassidy Rain. Bryan\, with his searing lead guitar\, effortlessly weaves intricate melodies that fall somewhere between the soulful prowess of Derek Trucks and the transcendent vibes of Jerry Garcia. Cassidy brings real and raw powerhouse vocals that fans have compared to artists like Bonnie Raitt\, Susan Tedeschi\, & Grace Potter\, as well as her rhythmic guitar work that is in constant conversation with the band. ​ \n​ \nMax Adler\, a Montclair University music graduate\, found his home behind the drum kit\, driving the band’s infectious grooves. Qaasim Munoz holds it down on the bass guitar adding a unique flavor to the band’s sonic tapestry. \n​​​ \nThe Outcrops’ journey has been marked by milestones\, such as sharing the stage with acts like The Outlaws\, Three Dog Night\, Alexis P. Suter\, Kat Wright\, and King Solomon Hicks\, to gracing the lineups of festivals such as Rock\, Ribs\, & Ridges\, the Anglesea Blues Festival\, Musikfest\, and Meeting of the Minds. Their performance earned them 1st place in the 2nd Annual SOPAC Blues Challenge back in 2017. \n​​ \nCASSIDY RAIN – LEAD VOCALS / RHYTHM GUITAR \nCassidy’s musical journey began before she can remember – she was singing and memorizing songs when she started talking. At the age of 5\, her parents got her a tape recorder that she used constantly to record songs she heard and sang. By the time she was 10 years old\, she had already started writing her own songs. At 14\, she picked up the acoustic guitar and it became her fondest companion; she took it everywhere with her – to school\, to the beach\, everywhere. Her guitars have their share of knicks and bruises from their adventures.  \n​​ \n​​​ \nBRYAN SCHROEDER – LEAD GUITAR / BACKUP VOCALS \nBryan’s journey in music began early as well\, attending his Dad’s band’s shows from a very young age. There are photos of him and his cousin on stage with his Dad’s band\, toy guitars in hand. However\, Bryan’s first musical venture was in drumming\, and he played drums for years before learning to play guitar. He began to really hone in on the guitar when he moved to California and was able to spend hours playing every day. \n​​​ \nMAX ADLER – DRUMS / BACKUP VOCALS \nMax rounds out The Outcrops rhythm section with a fluid groove that carries the band along like the ebbs and flows of a river.  Like the great blues\, soul and rock bands of the 60’s and 70’s\, his style has a foundation in Jazz.  Max was a student of the Jazz program at Montclair State University in New Jersey and he uses his knowledge and skills to add flavors and dynamics\, imprinting his style on the band’s sound. \n​ \nQAASIM MUNOZ – BASS GUITAR \nQaasim\, otherwise known as “Q”\, adds a uniquely funky & jazzy style of playing to The Outcrops. Besides playing music\, Q is also a professional fine artist.

Whether it’s with the comrades she’s collaborated with over nearly 20 sparkling years of music-making\, or the vivid portraits of people’s lives – and occasionally her own – she’s sketched in scores of emotionally resonant songs.  But most of all\, Borges has built a loyal following by connecting\, through her own charismatic\, down-to-earth spirit\, with her audience – whether they’re longtime fans from back when she broke through with her terrific “Silver City” debut in 2004\, or newcomers just now joining the party. \n  \nFast forward to the early months of 2020\, when the life-altering global pandemic hit populations hard. Closer to home\, the crisis not only suddenly\, jarringly halted performers touring or playing shows large or small\, but also quashed the creative chemistry that comes from musicians getting together and jamming in the same room. As an artist whose lifeblood flowed from these real-life exchanges of camaraderie and community\, the Boston-based Borges was faced with perhaps the most daunting question of her professional career: How to connect and continue as a vital and viable working artist amid a frightfully uncertain future fraught with unknowns. \n  \nThat’s where the aptly named brand new album\, “Together Alone\,” comes in. In a true-life twist on the old saying\, “when life gives you lemons …”\, a homebound Borges did the one thing she knew how to do better than almost anything else. She picked up her guitar and started writing songs such as “Wasting My Time\,” which serves as a thematic linchpin of sorts for the new album. Set to a measured\, ruminative gait and carried on dark currents of electric guitar and Hammond organ\, the lyrics feel like a gathering storm.  “It’s been awhile now since I’ve seen my friends / Don’t know when I’m gonna see ‘em again\,” Borges sings with the kind of pensive ache her twang and torch-lit voice was born for. “Without them around / It’s harder to pretend that I know where I’m going.” With the new normal being an isolating life in lockdown limbo\, the song seems to wonder whether time\, in this context\, is actually wasting us\, rather than the other way around. \n  \nIt was\, for Borges\, a scary proposition. But the solitary confinement that necessitated writing alone also felt liberating.  “I think my self-editing tool is always fierce\, and it’s what prevents me from being more prolific\,” Sarah says. “I feel like I’m always writing in blood\, like I have to stick to what I wrote the first time. But when you’re home alone\, and it’s a pandemic\, and you don’t know if anyone will ever even hear the songs\, all bets are off. You can write what you want and feel free to cross it out as many times as you want.” Even the job Borges took as an airport courier during the pandemic to keep the bills paid and home hearth burning proved creatively useful. The temporary gig translated into a boisterous new track\, namely the lighthearted rave-up\, “She’s A Trucker\,” based on the multi-Boston Music Award winner’s four-wheeling across state lines\, carrying occasionally strange cargo. Recently\, “I drove to Albany to deliver an airplane engine piece\, and another day it was ocular tissue – totally weird\, random stuff\,” she says with a laugh. “But all that time\, I was thinking about my music. With anything you love to do\, you always have to find a way forward if you can.” Besides\, she adds\, “there aren’t many lady truck driver songs\, so I thought I’d try my hand at one.” \n  \nSpeaking of hands\, Sarah received a huge one in the person of her longtime mentor Eric “Roscoe” Ambel\, the venerable producer and guitarist who’s played with everyone from Joan Jett & The Blackhearts to Steve Earle and The Dukes. More recently\, Ambel’s been Sarah’s band mate and co-conspirator in addition to his usual job running his Cowboy Technical Services Recording Rig studio in Brooklyn\, NY.  “Sarah and I had just come back from an incredible musical experience on the ‘Outlaw Country Cruise\,’ in February [2020]\, ” recalls Ambel of the traveling multi-artist\, fan-filled  getaway. But as the pandemic permeated life and gigs were canceled\, the water-bound jaunt started to feel like it was the last good time anybody was going to have for a very long time. To get a sense of just how good a time was had\, check out the rollicking new tribute to the cruise\, “You Got Me On The Boat\,” a sunny slice of hedonistic escapism co-written with Sarah’s boyfriend\, Bottle Rockets bassist Keith Voegele\, who contributes bass and vocals across several of the album’s tracks. \n  \nThat all changed when the state’s powers-that-be locked down the studio. With the pandemic scuttling any chance of  working live at CTS\, the two were forced to brainstorm what Ambel amusingly refers to as the “MacGyver Method” of recording songs\,  referencing the hit ‘80s TV series. Except that the idea involved a hell of a lot more than a rubber band\, stick of gum\, and strategically employed paper clip to escape the clutches of the villainous COVID-19.  Here’s how it worked: One by one\, Borges would send along her home-recorded guitar and vocal demos – with Sarah singing into her iPhone\, and utilizing her clothes closet as a vocal isolation booth – to Ambel’s home recording setup. He’d listen carefully to the rudimentary tracks\, and then sort out who in his musical Rolodex might play what\, where\, when\, and how.  The tricky part\, Ambel says\, was that “I had to think of not only great players\, but great players that could do a very good job recording themselves at home.” \n  \nAmong those ready\, willing\, and able was Voegele\, residing in Springfield\, Illinois. Another was Keith Christopher\, Ambel’s longtime Yayhoos band mate currently playing bass with Lynyrd Skynyrd\, and living in upstate New York. A talented trio of drummers scattered from New York to Nashville also sent in dispatches. To ensure a rapport between far-flung musicians that felt organic\, “I got songs to them in a very specific building order. Basically\, we all went back to the ‘70s in recording style\, working on one song at a time until it was complete. Time and geography didn’t really matter\,” says Ambel. “It was exciting to be on the virtual receiving end of all these great songs and performances.” One unforseen benefit to recording remotely? “I’ve gotten a lot more confident playing solo through writing this record\,” says Borges. “Because I wrote on acoustic guitar\, the songs had to be able to stand on their own enough to make a demo. Plus\, my callouses have gotten much better!” \n  \nGiven the circumstances\, it’s all the more remarkable that roughed-up romps like “Lucky Day” (a metaphorical love song about how the search for true romance can prove as elusive as a winning lottery ticket)\, have the bracing\, flesh-and-blood feel of like-minded musicians in sync. The chemistry doesn’t sound remote at all. Paramount to the entire enterprise\, of course\, were the fresh ideas Borges put to paper and the spirited music she envisioned in the first place. “Sarah’s a fearless writer and performer\,” says Ambel\, “and she’s a very good musician.”  “It feels like me\,” says Borges\, who calls making the record nothing short of  “a lifeline.” “The record feels really comfortable\, like a second skin already. It’s a good representation of who I am\, both musically and personally.” \n  \nIn fact\, contemplative tracks such as “Something To Do” and “13th Floor” are candid reflections that cut to the marrow of who she was\, and who she’s always becoming.  “On ‘13th Floor\,’ I was thinking about risk\,” says Borges\, “I’m still trying to sort out what six years alcohol-free means to me\, and I still draw on some of those feelings from ‘drunk-town’ for songs. And ‘Something To Do’ – recorded almost entirely during lockdown – harkens back to those days when calling a random number on a bar wall might have seemed like a good idea.” Ironically\, to find inspiration for the album’s final song\, “Together Alone\,” that had no lyrics or music attached to its title\, Borges and her band hit the road for a few select\, socially distanced dates in the Midwest this autumn. The shows\, her first in over a year\, proved challenging amid varying statewide vaccine or mask mandates (or lack thereof). But she didn’t return home empty-handed. \n  \n“Together Alone\,” written across\, and about\, dividing distances on the road\, is a bittersweet lament of loss\, memory\, and separation rendered in waltz time. “It’s the little things I’m missing / Now that they’re gone\,” Borges muses over a mournful melody. “Lines across faces\, and photos from places / Our shadows growing long.”  But as anyone familiar with Sarah’s songs knows\, genuinely soulful music that connects with us — and connects us to each other — can simultaneously steal\, and heal\, hearts. Ultimately\, if  “Together Alone” carries any message or lesson\, it’s about finding the courage to face the hard times head on and not give in or up. And it’s about caring enough to bring the things that you miss\, and that matter\, back to life. –Jonathan Perry
