SUMMARY:Patrick Sweany - Sportsmens
DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presents \nPatrick Sweany \nSunday\, July 12\, 2026 $20.00 + Online Fee \n2pm Doors\, 4pm Showtime \n \n \n \nPATRICK SWEANY – BABY\, IT’S LATEThe title of Patrick Sweany’s new record is apt for more reasons than might be readily apparent. \nFor fans\, it’s a nod to the massive amount of time between full-length albums (7 years if you are counting). For Sweany\, it’s a theme that’s permeated his latest songs (running out of time\, getting older). \nThe time in between 2018’s Ancient Noiseand Baby\, It’s Latehas been full of changes for Sweany. Difficult changes. These mile-markers and their aftermath made it challenging for Sweany to do what he’s done for over 20 years: write songs\, record songs\, get in a van and play those songs for you. \nIt wasn’t as though Sweany’s music-making simply stopped\, however. As the world opened back up after the pandemic\, Sweany resumed his Blue Monday residency at The 5 Spot in E. Nashville playing 50’s and 60’s era Blues songs with The Tiger Beats: McKinley James\, Jason Smay\, and Ted Pecchio. He also started a new Soul\, Funk project called SUPER FELONwith JD Simo\, Adam Abrashoff\, Pecchioand Robbie Crowell. Most importantly\, he started writing and recording again. \nFor the first time\, Sweany chose to do almost everything himself\, recording tracks on his Tascam 388 tape machine in his Bongo Room home studio. While the end results were not quite good enough for public consumption\, the kernels of some great new songs were started\, and a less polished\, more organic approach was established. \nSweany decided to call on the collaborators in The Tiger Beats and SUPER FELON to help him progress. Using JD Simo’s House Of Greasestudio and McKinley James’ Red Lodgestudio\, Sweany brought in players from both of these projects. \n“These guys are some of the most in-demand players in Nashville\,” says Sweany about the sessions. “They know when it’s right and when it’s not. If they felt like these songs weren’t good enough\, they’d tell me. \n”“We tracked two days live\, no headphones\, band in the room\, old school style. It felt good. It felt right. The songs sounded like songs.Back in the saddle.” \nOn top of the old-school style of recording\, Sweany chose to produce the recordings himself – something he’d never done \nThe results are a raw\, more direct collection of songs that tap directly into the pain\, tension\, and catharsis of the past seven years. Stylistically they capture elements of Sweany’s previous recordings: the raw Blues-Rock opener “My Time Ain’t Long”could be an outtake from 2008’s Every Hour Is A Dollar Gone\, while the subtle ballads “Christmas Parade”and “See Through”are reminiscent of 2015’s ruminative Daytime Turned To Nighttime. Elsewhere\, however\, Sweany embraces some new influences such as the hooky rock anthem “Golden Fields”and the 70s organ funk groove of “Trouble With Love.” \nAfter over 25 years writing\, recording and touring\, Sweany knows more than most that you can’t rush the process. You have to wait until the songs are ready. In that regard\, Baby\, It’s Never Too Late.

SUMMARY:The Nighthawks - The Cave
DESCRIPTION:The Cave presents \nThe Nighthawks \nSunday\, June 7\, 2026 $25.00 + Online Fee \n3pm Doors\, 4pm Showtime \n \n \n \n \nThe Nighthawks\n“Established 1972” \nVizzTone 2022\n“Established 1972” by The Nighthawks\,is an album that represents 50 years of Washington DC’s road warriors going strong. \nOn this landmark anniversary\, founder\, lead singer and harpmaster Mark Wenner is still at the helm\, while drummer Mark Stutso\,guitarist Dan Hovey and bassist Paul Pisciotta all share vocals and songwriting\, making this lineup one of the strongest ever. Decades of gigs and countless rabid fans have earned them the name “The Best Bar Band In The World.” More than a bar band or blues band\, as they’re frequently labeled\, this is a band that played with Carl Perkins in addition to Muddy Waters. \nIn March 2020\, with a brand-new recording to promote\, The Nighthawks did something previously unthinkable: They stopped in the middle of a Florida tour and drove home. Like so many other people\, the band members found themselves out of work as the coronavirus swept the country. Itching to play\, The Nighthawks found a couple of spaces large enough to stay apart while woodshedding new material. Previously\, the process had been a streamlined one: The band would rough out a dozen new tunes in an afternoon and perform them every night for a year or two before recording. But now there was time\, tons of it. Weeks turned into months. \nProduced by the Nighthawks and longtime compadre David Earl\, they took advantage of the pandemic slowdown to hunker down in Earl’s Severn Sound Studios in Annapolis\, Maryland and crank out fourteen new tracks in classic Nighthawks style. \nDan Hovey wrote a very relevant rocker\, “You Seem Distant.” Mark Stutso followed with a full blast “Coming and Going.” Florida friend Colin Kenny\, a.k.a. Raiford Starke\, wrote the soulful “West Memphis” and the band stylistically took it to Memphis. Stutso came up with “Gas Station Chicken” and everyone contributed to bringing in the funk. Hovey added three more: “Houseband\,” “Fuss and Fight\,” and the acoustic delight “Driving.” In between are British pub rock monster Gariant Watkins’ “Nobody”; Jimmy Reed’s “Take it Easy\,” featuring producer David Earl contributing the Eddie Taylor licks on guitar; Eddie Hinton’s version of Sam Cook’s “I’ll Come Running Back”; John Hammond’s version of Mose Allison’s “Ask Me Nice”; a wild version of the reggae classic “Johnny Too Bad”; an outtake rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Ain’t That Lovin’ You”; a Hillbilly interpretation of the Coasters’ “Run Red Run”; and half a dozen others that fell by the wayside. They’d play\, record\, rearrange\, and re-record til they got them just right. \nIn the tradition they set forth on Rock and Roll\, the band’s debut 1974 recording and mission statement\, the material is not bound by genre other than the widest range of American Roots Music.

SUMMARY:Chris Duarte Group - Sportsmens
DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presents \nChris Duarte Group \nWednesday\, May 13\, 2026 7pm \n$20.00 + Online fee \n \n \n \n \nTo classify Chris Duarte simply as a Blues Man is an understatement. In his own words\, “rockin’ blues” or ”punk blues” describes him best. “Ferocious blues” also fits. Legend has it that Chris will play so hard that his fingers bleed in a set. The legend is true. Photos attest. \n \nChris Duarte is a road warrior playing more than 150 dates a year. As well\, Chris has headlined major festivals and clubs throughout the US\, Canada and Europe. \n \nChris is a savant\, a sorcerer of tone\, a master at channeling the spirits and sounds of great musicians of our past\, while remaining completely recognizable in his own sound. He has shared his stage with many of the greatest musicians of our time as well as the multitude of “young lions” and local musicians he meets on the road. From his many years as a side man in Austin\, he easily changes roles from front to side\, graciously allowing all to share the conversation of the jam. \n \nChris Duarte’s music is ever changing. In many interviews\, he has said “Music must evolve.” His own early offerings often become magical journeys into changing tempo and jazzy interludes before returning to their core. With such a vast catalog of recordings\, there are no two shows alike. Every set list is different\, and each song may be offered distinctly\, based on the feel of a show and the audience. For those reasons\, loyal fans often return to a Chris Duarte show again and again\, and always walk away awed and satisfied to have witnessed such a legendary\, but humble guitarist. \n \nThe Chris Duarte Group emerged on the scene out of Austin\, Texas in the early 90’s and gained notoriety after wowing a packed room of industry insiders at the South X Southwest convention. In the wake of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s passing\, Duarte quickly gained a National reputation as young man imbued with a playing style comparable at times to the late guitarist. After fielding interest from a number of labels\, Duarte signed to Silvertone Records and his debut album “Texas Sugar/Strat Magik” reportedly sold in excess of 100\,000 units in the United States\, no small feat for a blues/rock guitarist. This coupled with Duarte’s strong commitment to touring\, was the impetus for Chris’ winning the “Best New Talent” in Guitar Player’s 1995 Reader’s Poll. He also finished fourth in the magazine’s “Best Blues Guitarist” category that year behind legends Eric Clapton\, Buddy Guy and B.B. King.

SUMMARY:Tinsley Ellis - Sportsmens
DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presents \nTinsley Ellis \nSunday\, February 15\, 2025 $25.00 \n3pm Doors\, 5pm Show \n \n \n \n \nTinsley Ellis – Naked Truth \n \nBio written by Marc Lipkin \n \n“An exciting\, emotional guitarist and a strong\, evocative songwriter…One of modern blues’ greatest performers.” –Vintage Guitar\n \n“A legend of American blues music…An American music treasure…Ellis delivers a sermon on the power and glory of the blues.” –Premier Guitar\n \n“Powerful\, spine-tingling guitar and gritty\, soulful vocals.” –Relix \n \nAccording to Atlanta-based blues guitarist\, singer and songwriter Tinsley Ellis\, his new\, first-ever solo acoustic album\, Naked Truth\, is both “a departure and an arrival.” Ellis has been recording and travelling the world for over four decades\, delivering his feral\, guitar-fueled\, original electric blues-rock to ever-growing audiences at concert halls\, festivals\, and clubs. Naked Truth is steeped in the folk blues traditions of Muddy Waters\, Skip James\, Son House\, Robert Johnson and even Leo Kottke. To the casual fan\, this might seem to be a new direction\, but for Ellis\, it’s an extension of his music\, as he taps into the raw essence of the blues. “This is a record I’ve always wanted to make\, and one that my longtime fans have been asking for\,” he says\, noting he’s included an acoustic mini-set in his concert performances for years. In the last 12 months\, Ellis has already performed over 100 solo shows\, many as co-bills with his Alligator label-mate Marcia Ball. “I’m having so much fun playing these shows\,” he says. \n \nOn Naked Truth (his 21stalbum)\, Ellis swaps his blistering\, guitar-fueled full band workouts for equally passionate\, soul-searching acoustic folk blues. His famed guitar chops and musical creativity are on full display throughout the album’s 12 songs\, including nine newly written originals. Naked Truth was produced by Ellis\, with the foot-stomping cover of Son House’s Death Letter Blues produced by Atlanta roots musician Eddie 9V. The album was recorded live in the studio using Ellis’ beloved 1969 Martin D-35 (a gift from his father) and his 1937 National Steel O Series guitars. Whether intricately fingerpicking the Martin or playing hair-raising slide on the National Steel\, Ellis delivers each song with unvarnished intimacy. \n \nThe opener\, Ellis’ original Devil In The Room\, comes from an expression Ellis’ close friend\, the late Col. Bruce Hampton\, would tell his musicians just before a show was about to begin (“We’re here to put the devil in the room\,” he’d say). From the original\, Skip James-inspired Windowpaneto the Delta-styled Tallahassee Blues\, to the humorous Grown Ass Man\, Ellis goes deep\, singing and playing the blues’ honest truths. The inclusion of four introspective instrumentals (including a transcendent cover of Leo Kottke’s A Soldier’s Grave On The Prairie\, a song he’s been playing live for almost 50 years) adds even more depth and substance to an album overflowing with riches. Each song carries the weight\, experience and hard-earned wisdom Ellis learned over four decades on the road\, infusing Naked Truth with an emotional authenticity that is palpable from start to finish. \n \nTinsley Ellis has been immersed in music his whole life. Born in Atlanta 1957 and raised in southern Florida\, he acquired his first guitar at age seven\, inspired by seeing The Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. He took to guitar instantly\, developing and sharpening his skills as he grew up. Like many kids his age\, Ellis discovered the blues through the back door of British Invasion bands like The Yardbirds\, The Animals\, Cream and The Rolling Stones as well as Southern rockers like The Allman Brothers. One afternoon after high school in 1972\, he and a friend were listening to Al Kooper and Michael Bloomfield’s Super Session record when his friend’s older brother told them that\, if they liked Super Session\, they should go see B.B. King\, who was in town that week. Tinsley saw that show from the very front row. As fate would have it\, King broke a guitar string while playing\, and after changing it without missing a beat\, he handed the broken string to young Tinsley. And yes\, Tinsley still has that string. \n \nLess than three years later\, Ellis\, already an accomplished teenaged musician\, left Florida and moved to Atlanta. He soon joined a hard-driving local blues band\, the Alley Cats. In 1981\, along with veteran blues singer and harpist Chicago Bob Nelson\, Tinsley formed The Heartfixers\, a group that would become Atlanta’s top-drawing blues band. After cutting four Heartfixers albums (three for the Landslide label)\, Ellis was ready to step out on his own. \n \nGeorgia Blue\, Tinsley’s first Alligator release\, hit the unprepared public by surprise in 1988\, as press and radio brought his music to more people than ever before. His next four releases—1989’s Fanning The Flames\, 1992’s Trouble Time\, 1994’s Storm Warning\, and 1997’s Fire It Up—further grew his reputation as well as his audience. (His song A Quitter Never Wins\, a highlight of Storm Warning\, was recorded by Jonny Lang\, selling almost two million copies.) Features and reviews ran in The Washington Post\, The Los Angeles Times\, The Boston Globe\, and in many other national and regional publications. And he backed it all up performing hundreds of nights per year. Rolling Stonedeclared\, “Feral blues guitar…non-stop gigging has sharpened his six-string to a razor’s edge…his eloquence dazzles…he achieves pyrotechnics that rival Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton.” \n \nIn the early 2000s\, Ellis released albums on Capricorn Records and on Telarc\, returning to Alligator in 2005 with Live–Highwayman\, which captured the fifth-gear energy of his roof-raising live show. He followed it with two more incendiary studio albums\, 2007’s Moment Of Truthand 2009’s Speak No Evil. He self-released four successful albums on his own Heartfixer label before coming back home to Alligator in 2018. That year\, he released the fan favorite Winning Hand\, followed by 2020’s Ice Cream In Hell just before the pandemic sidelined all touring. With 2022’s Devil May Care\, Ellis embarked on another relentless\, coast-to-coast tour\, further cementing his reputation as one of the most prolific and exciting blues rockers on the scene. \n \nTinsley Ellis has brought his music to fans live in person to all 50 United States\, as well as in Canada\, across Europe\, Australia and South America. He’s earned the love and respect of many of his fellow musicians\, having shared stages with Christone “Kingfish” Ingram\, The Allman Brothers\, Warren Haynes\, Oliver Wood\, Buddy Guy\, the Tedeschi Trucks Band\, Gov’t Mule\, Widespread Panic\, and more. Over the years\, legends including Otis Rush\, James Cotton\, Gregg Allman\, Jimmy Buffett\, Son Seals\, Koko Taylor and Albert Collins invited Ellis to join them on stage. Mega-star guitarist Joe Bonamassa calls Ellis “a national treasure.” \n \nNow\, with Naked Truth\, Ellis will bring his music directly to his fans. “Two guitars and a car\,” he says of the simplicity of his North American touring situation. “When folks come to see me\, I’ll have the guitars I used on the record with me\, so what fans hear on the album is what they’ll get live. It’s not easy. Now I’m the whole band and there’s nowhere to hide. It’s scary every single time I go up on stage alone. But nothing could be more honest.” \n \nNaked Truth is a revelation. Stripped of the electric fervor that defined his previous works\, Ellis’ acoustic music carries a rawness that speaks directly from his soul. The songs unveil another side of Tinsley Ellis\, but one that is totally recognizable to his fans. His gruff\, full-throated vocals intertwine seamlessly with the bare\, acoustic arrangements\, creating an album that is both timeless and immediate. No Depression says\, “Ellis shines. When the tempo slows\, the intensity doesn’t waver.” Blues Music Magazine states\, “Tinsley Ellis is a powerful and commanding presence. His music is impossible not to enjoy.”

SUMMARY:The Outcrops - Sportsmens Stage
DESCRIPTION:The Outcrops \nSaturday\, September 27\, 2025 8pm $10 \nout·crop /ˈoutˌkräp/ : an outstanding rock formation \n \nDeep in the woods of Northern New Jersey\, The Outcrops have emerged as a force to be reckoned with. This tight-knit group of musicians weaves together the soulful sounds of blues\, the infectious rhythms of funk and soul\, and the electrifying energy of rock’n’roll\, creating a sonic experience that had them named “Band of the Year” (Aquarian\, 2020). \n \nAt the core of The Outcrops are the dynamic duo of Bryan Schroeder and Cassidy Rain. Bryan\, with his searing lead guitar\, effortlessly weaves intricate melodies that fall somewhere between the soulful prowess of Derek Trucks and the transcendent vibes of Jerry Garcia. Cassidy brings real and raw powerhouse vocals that fans have compared to artists like Bonnie Raitt\, Susan Tedeschi\, & Grace Potter\, as well as her rhythmic guitar work that is in constant conversation with the band. \n \nMax Adler\, a Montclair University music graduate\, found his home behind the drum kit\, driving the band’s infectious grooves. Qaasim Munoz holds it down on the bass guitar adding a unique flavor to the band’s sonic tapestry. \n \nThe Outcrops’ journey has been marked by milestones\, such as sharing the stage with acts like The Outlaws\, Three Dog Night\, Alexis P. Suter\, Kat Wright\, and King Solomon Hicks\, to gracing the lineups of festivals such as Rock\, Ribs\, & Ridges\, the Anglesea Blues Festival\, Musikfest\, and Meeting of the Minds. Their performance earned them 1st place in the 2nd Annual SOPAC Blues Challenge back in 2017. \n \nCASSIDY RAIN – LEAD VOCALS / RHYTHM GUITAR \nCassidy’s musical journey began before she can remember – she was singing and memorizing songs when she started talking. At the age of 5\, her parents got her a tape recorder that she used constantly to record songs she heard and sang. By the time she was 10 years old\, she had already started writing her own songs. At 14\, she picked up the acoustic guitar and it became her fondest companion; she took it everywhere with her – to school\, to the beach\, everywhere. Her guitars have their share of knicks and bruises from their adventures. \n \n \nBRYAN SCHROEDER – LEAD GUITAR / BACKUP VOCALS \nBryan’s journey in music began early as well\, attending his Dad’s band’s shows from a very young age. There are photos of him and his cousin on stage with his Dad’s band\, toy guitars in hand. However\, Bryan’s first musical venture was in drumming\, and he played drums for years before learning to play guitar. He began to really hone in on the guitar when he moved to California and was able to spend hours playing every day. \n \nMAX ADLER – DRUMS / BACKUP VOCALS \nMax rounds out The Outcrops rhythm section with a fluid groove that carries the band along like the ebbs and flows of a river. Like the great blues\, soul and rock bands of the 60’s and 70’s\, his style has a foundation in Jazz. Max was a student of the Jazz program at Montclair State University in New Jersey and he uses his knowledge and skills to add flavors and dynamics\, imprinting his style on the band’s sound. \n \nQAASIM MUNOZ – BASS GUITAR \nQaasim\, otherwise known as “Q”\, adds a uniquely funky & jazzy style of playing to The Outcrops. Besides playing music\, Q is also a professional fine artist.
