DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presents \nThe Gibson Brothers \nSunday\, October 4\, 2026 $30.00 + Online Fees \n4pm Doors\, 6pm Showtime \n \n \n  \nThe Gibson Brothers \nThere’s a reason why Ricky Skaggs pulled Eric and Leigh Gibson off the stage at the Ryman \ntwo decades ago and offered to produce their debut record. The same thing that led David \nFerguson and Grammy Award winning producer and Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach to \nco‑write and produce their 14th album “Mockingbird” (2018) and release it on his own label Easy \nEye Sound alongside cultural icons such as Hank Williams Jr. and Dr. John: The Gibson \nBrothers are the real deal. They can pick. They can sing. And they can write a damn good \ncountry song. They’ve won about every bluegrass award you can name and released albums on \nalmost every Premier Americana label you can think of including Sugar Hill and Rounder\, and\, if \nthat’s not enough\, their songs have been recorded by bluegrass legends no less than Del \nMcCoury. It’s a resume almost anybody in country music would be proud to have. But despite all \nof this\, The Gibson Brothers are not yet household names. Their latest album\, \n“Darkest Hour\,” produced by dobro master Jerry Douglas might just change that. \nAs soon as you hear Leigh singing with Alison Krauss [“I Feel The Same Way As You”] on the \nnew project you realize that his voice is as good as anyone in music today. Add the brother \nharmony to that and they have something truly unique. While “Mockingbird” featured gorgeous \nproduction\, recreating the sound on stage was difficult. \n“We put together a little band to go out and try to recreate it\,” \nEric told me\, but we couldn’t. We would have to have such a huge band to \ntry to recreate that record\, but we did the best we could.” \nDouglas—who has won 14 Grammy awards and backed up everyone from Ray Charles to Paul \nSimon and George Jones—wanted to make a record they could actually play on the road. So he \npicked the best songs (out of dozens) and squirreled them away in Sound Emporium’s Studio B. \nBut then the pandemic hit. \n“We did our last shows in March of 2020\, ” Eric told me. \n“We were in Nashville the week everything was shutting down. It was surreal\, but Jerry was like\, \n‘Guys\, the world’s going crazy. Let’s let this be our little cocoon. \n’ And we did. We cut all of the acoustic stuff and then went home and didn’t play any more gigs until things started opening. \nThen we went back and finished the record with Jerry in February of 2021.” \nThe result is arguably the strongest record The Gibson Brothers have ever made. The songs \nrecorded in the first recording period featured Mike Barber (bass)\, Justin Moses (mandolin)\, \nEamon McGloughlin (fiddle)\, and of course\, Jerry Douglas\, adding in John Gardner (drums)\, \nGuthrie Trapp (electric guitar)\, and Todd Parks (bass) for the final tracks\, \n“Darkest Hour” showcases just how easily Eric and Leigh move from what Dan Auerbach dubbed “country soul” \n(“I Go Driving”) to high octane bluegrass (“What a Difference A Day Makes” and “Dust”) with \nDouglas always keeping the spotlight on the songs themselves. \n“That’s what I love about those guys\,” Douglas told me “they are just great songwriters.” \nGrowing up on a dairy farm in northern New York and then traveling around the world in a \nbluegrass band has given them a unique vantage point on life\, and the songs on “Darkest Hour” \nare a testament to that. “Jerry wanted to hear everything we’d written\,” Eric told me\, “so we just \nsent him songs: brand new songs\, old songs\, there’s stuff on that record 20 years old that we \nnever recorded. We wanted to see what he would do with us as singer‑songwriters. We respect \nhim that much. Some of my favorite records are Jerry Douglas produced records. He didn’t \ndisappoint.” \nIf The Gibson Brothers had stayed in Nashville in 1999 they might possibly be Grand Ole Opry \nmembers by now. At the very least they would be hit songwriters on Music Row. But\, just like \ntheir buddy Del McCoury\, they chose family over success (McCoury was in his 50s when he \nmoved to Nashville and didn’t really see major success until he was approaching 60). All they \nneed is someone to shine a light on them.Their talent level is well‑established\, the only \nproducers they have ever worked with are Ricky Skaggs\, Dan Auerbach\, David Ferguson \nandJerry Douglas. I dare say not many musicians can stack up a list of producers that strong. \nFor The Gibson Brothers though\, they just want to keep writing\, singing\, and standing on a \nstage.

Young and old sat shoulder-to-shoulder\, taking a break from the town’s mountain hikes and river campgrounds to take in Muzzie Braun and the Boys––a local family band who’d made it to the Grand Ole Opry\, effortlessly spouted cowboy poetry and Western swing at gatherings around the country\, and featured Muzzie’s four young sons––precocious boys with rock-and-roll futures. \n  \n“There were kids running around\, people dancing\,” says Micky Braun\, the youngest brother who first climbed on stage to join the family when he was about five years-old. “Gary and I’d get up and play a couple of songs\, then we’d get off and the older brothers would stay up and play a couple more. It’s pretty funny\, looking back on it.” He laughs a little\, then adds\, still smiling\, “That’s how we got started playing.” \n  \nThe Braun brothers never stopped. Big brothers Cody and Willy started Reckless Kelly\, and Micky and Gary left Idaho for Austin and started Micky and the Motorcars\, a road-dogging favorite whose nonstop tour for the last 17 years has defined not just the lives of the brothers\, but also shaped Austin’s roots-rock resurgence that has played out over the last two decades. With their anticipated new album Long Time Comin’\, the Motorcars cement their place as elder statesmen of that alt-country scene who have managed to master that ever-elusive blend of artistic familiarity and surprise. \n  \n“I hope people take the time to hear the album as a whole\, and I hope they like it\,” Gary says from his home in Austin. “I think this one is a little bit better.” He pauses and laughs as he drawls\, “So I hope they like it a little more.”  \n  \nFor the Motorcars\, the question is never really whether to tour but where to play next. Gary––who handles guitar\, mandolin\, harmonica\, harmonies\, and occasionally lead vocals––and Micky\, lead vocalist and acoustic guitarist\, are joined in the Motorcars by Andy Carrell on bass\, Bobby Paugh on drums and percussion\, and new bandmate Pablo Trujillo on guitar. The combination of familiar and fresh players has reinvigorated the Motorcars’ live show\, which buzzes through a low-key rock-and-roll rapture built on grooves and the Brauns’ signature harmonies. \n  \nA mix of new and old also shaped the Long Time Comin’ recording process. Produced by Keith Gattis\, the 11-song album relied in part on Gattis’ go-to Nashville studio players––a first for the Motorcars. “It still sounds like Micky and the Motorcars\, but it was fun working with different guys who we’d never worked with before\,” Micky says. “They’ve been Keith’s band for 15 years. He can say\, ‘Give me a shuffle with a boom-chuck\,’ and they know what he’s talking about.”  \n  \nThe band isn’t the only change on Long Time Comin’. Gary\, who has always contributed a song or two to Motorcar records\, wrote or co-wrote six of the album’s tracks and sings every tune he penned. “I don’t think I decided to really write more––I think I just got better at it and worked a little harder at it the past couple of years\,” Gary says. “In the past\, I just let Micky do it because he was good at it. It was easy for me not to do it.”  \n  \nMicky loves the shift. “It’s almost a split album between the two of us on lead vocal––very different from our normal\,” he says. “I think our fans will enjoy it. They always love the songs Gary sings live. They always want him to sing more.”  \n  \nThe album kicks off with the ambling “Road to You.” Written by Micky and Courtney Patton\, the rollicking singalong is classic Motorcars and an ideal welcome mat for the collection. Sauntering “Rodeo Girl” swings and punches up the pace\, before “Alone Again Tonight”––a Gary track written with Gattis––watches loneliness with empathetic ache.  \n  \nSeveral tracks take note of the universal search for comfort––even when it’s not the stuff of fairytales or even particularly dignified. Over crunchy guitars\, “Stranger Tonight” captures an evening’s quest for no-strings companionship. “It was an idea I had just watching people at bars––that lonely girl I saw time and time again but with a different set of glasses\, over and over\,” Gary says. “It seems like everybody can relate to that––out looking for something new that doesn’t have to be love.” \n  \nSweet and sad\, “Break My Heart\,” another track penned by Gary with Jeff Crosby\, looks back after the end of a relationship. “You’re not mad anymore but you’re thankful of the good times\,” Gary says. “It’s also about finding yourself again. It’s a moving-on song.” Quiet and sparse\, the Gary-penned “Run into You” details a longing to cross paths with an ex-lover who’s moved on with heartbreaking clarity. \n  \nAnchored by crying B-3 organ\, “Hold This Town Together” explores the struggle to enjoy what once was easy after the loss of someone who’ll never come back. After years of trying\, Micky wrote the song for Mark\, a friend and the Motorcars’ first bassist\, who passed away. “Hold This Town\,” written by Micky and Jeff Crosby\, muses over the hometown faces and places that never change. “There are the same people at the same bars\, the same people working at the grocery stores\,” Micky says\, then adds with a laugh\, “It’s kind of a depressing party song.” Another Jeff Crosby-Micky collaboration\, “Thank My Mother’s God” pays beautiful tribute to moms and their devotion to their black sheep\, running wild. \n  \nTwo album standouts stand tall: “Lions of Kandahar\,” written by Gary alone\, and the title track\, which Micky penned with master songwriter Bruce Robison. Over instrumentation that evokes the tense hum of Middle Eastern military activity\, “Lions of Kandahar” follows a deployment from a first-person perspective. The result is jarring\, compelling\, and deeply human––a breathtaking piece of songwriting that took five years to complete. Winsome “Long Time Comin’” is an ode to the satisfaction of patience and perseverance rewarded in different forms––a stunning tapestry that also reflects the road to the album itself. \n  \nGuitars and songs at the ready\, Micky and Gary hope most of all that their sprawling cross-continental fanbase connect with Long TimeComin’\, a collection four years in the making. “If you can put your heart on your sleeve and say it\, it’s the best medicine for people\,” Micky says\, reflecting on the album. “They can lock into it and enjoy the ride.”  \n  \n \n  \nWith a decades-long commitment to his craft as a songwriter\, Jason Eady has built his career on bringing his unique perspective to a variety of genres\, from the “groove centered” blues of his native Mississippi to the classic sound of Texas\, the place he calls home. Written and recorded in Hiatt’s new home just outside Nashville\, the collection grapples with growth and change\, escape and anxiety\, self-loathing and self-love. The songs are intensely vulnerable here\, full of diaristic snapshots and deeply personal ruminations\, but they’re also broad invitations to find yourself in Hiatt’s unflinching emotional excavations\, to see your own humanity reflected back in her pursuit of something larger than herself. The world seemed to be changing faster than she could keep up with\, and rather than embracing what should have been her triumphant return\, Hiatt instead began retreating from everything she’d worked so hard to build. \n  \n“I fell in love\, got married\, adopted a dog\, all the things I’d always dreamed of doing\,” she reflects. “But I felt like an outsider watching myself stumble though it all\, just constantly critiquing myself to the point where I became so paralyzed I could hardly leave home.” \n  \nHiatt tried therapy and antidepressants\, talked to friends and family\, wrote dozens and dozens of songs about her feelings\, all in the hopes of quieting her racing mind. \n  \n“There was this intensity where I felt so jacked up all the time\,” she explains. “Eventually I just realized that my life was passing me by\, that the love I was living in required presence to accept. So I started doing the little things you have to do to show up for the people in your life: listen\, grow\, change. I learned to expand my world.” \n  \nHiatt left the bustle of Nashville for a more rural setting outside the city and scrapped all the material she’d been working on\, starting from scratch with Hinson in pursuit of something that would resonate more with the new chapter she was embarking upon. The pair worked quickly\, tackling the writing and recording of each song one-at-a-time from the ground up and sending the material off to Paul Kolderie (Radiohead\, Pixies) to mix as they finished it. \n  \n“Paul brought so much enthusiasm and dimension to the project\,” Hiatt explains. “Every time we had a song tracked\, we’d share it with him and then he’d get really excited about it\, which was really affirming and encouraged us to turn right around and get started on the next one.” \n  \nThat excitement is plain to hear on Forever\, which opens with the brawny “Hidden Day.” “I’m gonna find a place where no one needs nothin’ from me\,” Hiatt declares on the electrifying track\, which fantasizes about a secret 24 hours where the world stops tugging at your sleeve long enough to let you catch your breath. Like much of the album\, the song—which was written with Scot Sax and co-mixed by Jon Debaun—is grounded in concrete details from Hiatt’s personal life\, but it’s also a conversational tune rooted in intimacy between the singer and her audience: “I stumbled upon a day I wanna tell you about\,” she declares. “It’s our little secret\, you better keep it to yourself.” The breezy\, lo-fi “Ghost Ship” reminds us of the common ground we share no matter our superficial differences (“I’m looking for something\, and you are\, too”)\, while the driving “Shouldn’t Be” meditates on the universal need to stand in your beliefs without requiring the validation of others\, and the dreamy “Somewhere” longs to escape from the weight of judgment\, both internal and external. \n  \n“I’ve always been fascinated with escape in my writing\,” Hiatt reflects. “A lot of these songs like to imagine a moment or a place where you can become untethered from reality\, from the mundane\, from yourself. Sometimes just being with the person you love is all it takes. \n  \nIndeed\, the power of real and lasting love—how it can change you for the better and sustain you at your lowest—is woven into the very fabric of Forever.  The twangy “Man” revels in the security of knowing where you stand in a committed relationship; the playful “Kwik-E-Mart” celebrates the ordinary moments that take on new meaning when shared with a partner; and the blistering title track takes stock of what matters once you’ve found what you’ve been looking for. “I can be anyone out here\, but I can’t be in love / With a restaurant or a new haircut\,” Hiatt sings over a wall of fuzzed out guitars. “Nice to be a loner\, no one knows you’re hurt / But I wanna be by your side\, I wanna be by your side forever.” \n  \n“I wrote ‘Forever’ on tour in San Francisco after playing this festival where they put me and the band up in this amazing hotel\,” Hiatt recalls. “I couldn’t have been happier to be there\, and there was a time in my life when I would have wanted nothing more than to stay forever. But in that moment\, I realized the thing I was most excited about was getting back to my house and my dog and telling my husband all about it.” \n  \nUltimately\, that revelation is what Forever is all about. The release of Rhinestone Requiem represents another milestone. “This is the first time I’ve made a record when I don’t have relationship problems\,” Sweeney says\, smiling. “My last album\, ‘Married Alone\,’ was made right after my divorce. I’ve lived some life. Not all of it’s been pretty. But I feel like that’s what makes really good music.” \nSweeney takes her calling as friend to the hurt and alone seriously––and Rhinestone Requiem shines because of it. Recorded at Tommy Detamore’s Cherry Ridge Studio in Floresville\, Texas\, the album is a compelling snapshot of an artist who knows who she is and what she loves. “I really wanted this album to be a mixture of all the old styles of country music: Jerry Lee Lewis\, Waylon Jennings\, Loretta Lynn\,” Sweeney says\, ticking off a list of some of her idols. “I make music for myself and hope other people like it.” \nIndeed\, the specter of Lewis looms large from the jump\, as the album kicks off with “Find It Where I Can\,” the sauntering\, boozy warning shot recorded by The Killer\, as well as other giants including Waylon Jennings. Sweeney discovered the song during a late-night YouTube deep dive into videos of Lewis and Mickey Gilley hammering away on dueling baby grands. “You know\, they’re cousins\, and their grandmother taught them how to play piano––that’s why their playing style is so similar!” Sweeney says\, relishing the backstory. “And when I heard this song\, I knew I had to record it. It’s not like anything else I have\, and it’s just so fun to sing and play.” \nJubilantly wry “Diamonds and Divorce Decrees” traces the ruins after a marriage ends\, cataloging the pain but looking stubbornly toward happiness. Sweeney has been playing the song live\, and has been struck by how strongly audiences have responded. “One night after we played it\, a guy came up to the stage and said\, ‘I have three days until my divorce is final\, and this song made me know everything is going to be fine\,’” Sweeney says. \nWritten with dear friend and frequent collaborator Brennen Leigh\, “Traveling On” is a superbly crafted heartbreaker showcasing the devastating power of Sweeney’s voice. Written with Ben Chapman and Erin Enderlin\, “Is Tonight the Night (I Make You a Memory)” starts off slow and sad\, before speeding up into a bouncy\, steel-laced shuffle worthy of The Mavericks. Another Enderlin and Sweeney collaboration with the addition of Gary Nicholson\, “I Drink Well with Others” is a winking dancehall duster\, while “As Long as There’s a Honky Tonk”––written with Buddy Owens and Galen Griffin––is a swaggering\, piano-soaked proclamation of independence. \nOne of only two album tracks Sweeney didn’t have a hand in writing\, “Last Hard Bible” nods to the whimsical grit of its writer and original recording artist\, Kasey Chambers\, as Sweeney steers the song firmly into saloon-worthy territory. Chambers and her brother\, Nash\, provide harmonies on Sweeney’s track. When Sweeney joins Chambers for shows in the summer of 2025\, it will mark a full-circle moment for Sweeney\, who is a longtime fan of the Australian singer-songwriter. \nWith crying steel\, “Waiting for a Reason to Stay” tearfully harnesses the potential of conversational songwriting. “I’ve always wondered what was wrong with me\,” Sweeney sings\, opening the song with gut-wrenching directness. What follows is a meditation on the days after you’ve decided to go––but haven’t left yet. “I’ve had records about the bad side of divorce\,” Sweeney says. “This is the light at the end of the tunnel.” Written with Owens and Monty Holmes\, album closer “Half Lit in 3/4 Time” is a masterclass in country songwriting\, as line after line pays tribute to honky tonk’s beloved instruments and golden standards. A\nmechanic lies among the spare parts on the floor of his garage and wonders if he can\nafford to keep his girlfriend. A troubled man sees hallucinations of a black dog and a\nwandering boy and hums “Weird Al” songs in his head. These are some of the strange\nand richly drawn characters who inhabit James McMurtry’s eleventh album\, The Black\nDog & the Wandering Boy. A supremely insightful and inventive storyteller\, he teases\nvivid worlds out of small details\, setting them to arrangements that have the elements of\nAmericana—rolling guitars\, barroom harmonies\, traces of banjo and harmonica—but\nsound too sly and smart for such a general category. Funny and sad often in the same\nbreath\, the album adds a new chapter to a long career that has enjoyed a resurgence as\nyoung songwriters like Sarah Jarosz and Jason Isbell cite him as a formative influence. \nAs varied as they are\, these new story-songs find inspiration in scraps from his family’s\npast: a stray sketch\, an old poem by a family friend\, the hallucinations experienced by\nhis father\, the writer Larry McMurtry. “It’s something I do all the time\,” he says\, “but\nusually I draw from my own scraps.” As any good writer will do\, McMurtry collects little\nideas and hangs on to them for years\, sometimes even decades. “South Texas Lawman”\ngrew out of a line from a poem by a friend of the McMurtry clan\, T.D. Hobart. Driven by\ngravelly guitars and a loose rhythm section\, it’s a careful study of a man whose feelings\nof obsolescence motivate him to take drastic action in the final verse. “Dwight’d stay at\nour house way back in the ‘70s\, when we lived in Virginia. During one visit he wrote this\npoem about his father’s attitude toward South Texas. He wrote it down on cardboard\,\nand I came across it recently. There was a line about hunting quail on horseback\, and\nthat was the seed of the song. I’ve lost the poem since then.” \nThe rumbling title track\, a kind of squirrelly blues\, features two mysterious figures who\nappear only to those slipping from reality\, yet it’s never grim nor especially despairing.\nInstead\, McMurtry namechecks a “Weird Al” deep cut and depicts a tortured soul who\ndoesn’t have to work a nine-to-five. He finds a defiant humor in the situation at odds\nwith the gravity of the source material. “The title of the album and that song comes from\nmy stepmother\, Faye. After my dad passed\, she asked me if he ever talked to me about\nhis hallucinations. He’d gone into dementia for a while before he died\, but hadn’t\nmentioned to me anything about seeing things. She told me his favorite hallucinations \nwere the black dog and the wandering boy. I took them and applied them to a fictional\ncharacter.” \nSoon McMurtry had enough of these songs for a new record. “It happened like all my\nrecords happened. It’d been too long since I’d had a record that the press could write\nabout and get people to come out to my shows. It was time.” What was different this\ntime was the presence of his old friend Don Dixon\, who produced McMurtry’s third\nalbum\, Where You’d Hide the Body?\, back in 1995. “A couple of years ago I quit\nproducing myself. I felt like I was repeating myself methodologically and stylistically. I\nneeded to go back to producer school\, so I brought in CC Adcock for Complicated Game\,\nand then Ross Hogarth did The Horses & the Hounds. It seemed natural to revisit Mr.\nDixon’s homeroom. I wanted to learn some of what he’s learned over the last thirty\nyears.” During sessions at Wire Recording in Austin\, McMurtry observed firsthand\nDixon’s grasp of digital recording technology as well as his instinctual approach to\ntracking. “What Don’s really good at is being able to sense when it’s happening. He can\nhear when it’s going down. If I’m producing myself and I don’t have him\, I have to do\nthree takes and then go in and listen to them. Listening to those three takes can take\nabout 15 minutes. So Dixon’s ability to know when it’s happening is crucial\, because it\ncan cut 15 minutes out of the day. That can really save a session\, because you only have\nso many hours in the day and only so much energy.\nWorking with McMurtry’s trusted backing band—Cornbread on bass\, Tim Holt on\nguitar\, Daren Hess on drums\, BettySoo on backing vocals—they worked to create\nsomething that sounds spontaneous\, as though he’s writing the songs as you hear them.\nThey were open to odd experiments\, weird whims\, and happy accidents\, such as the\ncover of Jon Dee Graham’s “Laredo” that opens the album. It’s an opioid blues:\ntestimony from a part-time junkie losing a weekend to dope. “We were playing a benefit\nfor Jon Dee at the Hole in the Wall there in Austin\, and we thought it’d be good if we\nplayed one of his songs. We rehearsed the song in the studio\, and it sounded good. The\ndrums were ready. We’d already got the sounds up. Might as well record it.” \n“Laredo” is one of a pair of covers that bookend The Black Dog & the Wandering Boy\,\nthe other being Kris Kristofferson’s “Broken Freedom Song.” “I did that one a few weeks\nafter our initial sessions. It was just me and BettySoo\, then we added drums and bass\nlater on. Kris had just passed not too long before we recorded it. I guess that’s why I was\nthinking about him.” Like Hobart’s poem\, it’s a bit of inspiration excavated from deep\nwithin his own life. “Kris was one of my major influences as a child. He was the first\nperson that I recognized as a songwriter. I hadn’t really thought about where songs\ncame from\, but I started listening to Kristofferson as a songwriter and thinking\, How do\nyou do this? He was actually the second concert I saw. I was nine. He and the band were \nhaving such a good time\, and that really solidified for me that this was what I wanted to\ndo with my life.” \nOnce the album was mixed\, mastered\, and sequenced\, McMurtry recalled a rough pencil\nsketch he had found a few years earlier in his father’s effects. It seemed like it might\nmake a good cover. “I knew it was of me\, but I didn’t realize who drew it. I asked my\nmom and my stepdad\, and finally I asked my stepmom\, Faye\, who said it looked like\nKen Kesey’s work back in the ‘60s. She was married to Ken for forty years.” The Merry\nPrankster’s—Kesey’s roving band of hippie activists and creators—stopped by often to\nvisit Larry McMurtry and his family. “I don’t remember their first visit\, the one\ndocumented in Tom Wolfe’s Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. I was too young\, but I do\nremember a couple of Ken’s visits. I guess he drew it on one of those later stops. I\nremembered it and thought it would be the perfect art\, but I had to go back through the\nstorage locker. It’s a miracle that I found it again.”\nIt’s a fitting image for an album that scavenges personal history for inspiration. Even the\nsongwriter himself doesn’t always know what will happen or where the songs will take\nhim. “You follow the words where they lead. If you can get a character\, maybe you can\nget a story. If you can set it to a verse-chorus structure\, maybe you can get a song. A\nsong can come from anywhere\, but the main inspiration is fear. Specifically\, fear of\nirrelevance. If you don’t have songs\, you don’t have a record. If you don’t have a record\,\nyou don’t have a tour. You gotta keep putting out work.”

He won a Tony Award for his performance in Duncan Sheik’s hit musical Spring Awakening\, portrayed the Jesus of Suburbia in the Broadway adaptation of Green Day’s Grammy winning rock opera American Idiot\, and most recently starred in Swept Away – a new musical featuring songs by The Avett Brothers. But when it comes to his music\, that’s a bit more personal.  \nBorn in the Small Wonder to folk musicians\, John wrote his first song at the ripe age of 5. Rather\, just the chorus\, as he would earnestly admit to his listeners today. In the years between he has played in a half-dozen bands ranging from roots rock to pop punk. He gigs most often as a solo performer\, wielding his Gibson J-45 and red lightning bolt strap. Taking inspiration from Prine\, Costello\, Springsteen\, Westerberg and Schlesinger – his music is raw\, honest\, and heartfelt. Emo folk rock\, if you will. \n“Write what you know – I don’t go for that\,” John joked while sharing his latest crop of songs at Rockwood Music Hall – the venue on NYCs Lower East Side that has hosted him since 2006 and released his debut album Six Day Hurricane (2016). The wry humor is par for the course at a Gallagher gig. Produced by guitarist Thad DeBrock\, this LP drew comparisons to the jangly Laurel Canyon guitars of The Byrds and the lean bar band dynamics of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Following the release\, John hit the road as an opening act for Anaïs Mitchell and Aaron Lee Tasjan.  \n2021 saw the online self release of 8th and Jane\, a short but sweet 8 song sophomore effort. It’s a fast and fierce postcard jammed with power pop rock and roll numbers\, smoothed out by several soul searching acoustic ballads. An almost tragicomic blend of the rootsy bravado and vulnerable heart-on-sleeve reflection that has become a staple of his music. \nJohn writes with an emphasis on the confessional\, cathartic\, and emotional. His third record\, Goodbye or Something\, was released on June 28th\, 2024 on the indie label Grand Phony Music. Tracked at Studio G Brooklyn and featuring Zach Jones\, Oscar Albis Rodriguez\, Chris Cubeta\, Hannah Winkler\, and Todd Caldwell\, it’s his most personal and profound LP to date. Everybody involved is on the same path. We’ve got the same mission and we feel good about it. These songs have been cared for and thought about\, where everything is happening with intention — there’s purpose behind the music.” \nThat mission of luminous tone and honest intent is no more apparent than Magnolia Boulevard’s latest self-titled album. Captured by legendary Kentucky producer Duane Lundy\, the eight-song LP runs the gamut of genres\, all with thick threads of the blues and soul radiating from the tracks. \n“We like a lot of different things\, so let’s start a band that’s blues and soul\, the rest being whatever else we feel like adding\,” Allen says. “These are songs and stories of the struggles of Appalachian people\, these little snapshots of time of what it’s like to live around here.” \n“Inspiration comes and goes\,” Noelle adds. “I’ve realized\, in these later years of songwriting\, I tend to write about my current life and where my heart is.” \nFormed in 2017 by Noelle and Allen\, the band came together when other creative endeavors weren’t fulfilling the artistic desires and professional expectations of what the duo were envisioning. It was time to push down the gas pedal on the possibility and potential of what Magnolia Boulevard could be\, and ultimately has become — in sonic design and in the live realm. \n  \n“The sound has been described as ‘Appalachian Soul\,’ and I really like that because of our Appalachian roots\,” Noelle says. “You get a taste of folk with the songwriting portion\, but you also have that rock and soul foundation.” \nWatching Noelle under the bright lights\, her stage presence immediately conjures whispers in the audience\, where her fiery vocal talents are compared to the likes of Susan Tedeschi\, Bonnie Raitt\, and Grace Potter. And yet\, Magnolia Boulevard remains unique and steadfast in its approach. \n  \nThe powerhouse group is rounded out by Roddy Puckett (bass)\, Austin Lewis (guitar) and Brandon Johnson (drums). With this bountiful lineup\, Magnolia Boulevard has been making the rounds around Southern Appalachia and beyond\, each show an opportunity to once again justify its reputation as one of the rising\, “must see” rock shows anywhere in the country. \n\n“It feels a lot better when it is the sum of all the parts\, when you have five people all going after the same thing\,” Allen says. “We’re not sacrificing or compromising anything\, and in a way that we maybe had before. It feels like we’re got something substantial here that we’re really proud of.” \n“Everybody in the band is also interpreting the lyrics and showing emotion\, because they’re into it\, too\,” Noelle adds. “They feel the same emotions\, and there’s something magic about it [when we’re playing].” \nAnd as Magnolia Boulevard grows and evolves into a national act\, the core essence and melodic attitude of the unit will proudly reside in the rich\, vibrant music scene of its native Lexington and greater Kentucky. \n“In Kentucky\, we’ve got a little bit of everything\, and we just have this real sense of community\,” Noelle says. “Everybody has always been supportive of each other’s projects\, no matter the genre\, and I think that’s important.” \n“There’s also this feeling of gratitude\,” Allen adds. “More and more\, I’ll just catch myself feeling really thankful for where we are. It comes from what we’ve gone through\, and being able to persevere through it — it makes it even better when you wind up on the other side.” \nWith the new record appearing on the horizon and an upcoming tour running up and down the East Coast\, what remains for Magnolia Boulevard is this deep\, renewed sense of purpose — one held and shared with any and all who happen to happily wander into their musical landscape. \n“Playing live is what we crave\,” Noelle says. “[Onstage]\, we escape to a place where we can all be free\, leaving fears and anxieties at the door\, forgetting yesterday’s troubles — it’s a form of therapy at this point to just lay it all out.” \n  \n\n“The first time I saw Maggie sing\, I knew we had a chance to reach a lot of people\,” Allen adds. “We’ve come a long way since that first rehearsal. DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presents \nYarn \nWednesday\, April 15\, 2026 7pm \n$25.00 \n \nYou might expect a band that calls itself Yarn to\, naturally\, tend to spin a yarn or two. “That’s what we do\, we tell stories\, live and in the studio\, truth and fiction”\,singer/songwriter Blake Christiana insists. “We don’t always opt for consistency. There’s a different vibe onstage from what comes through in our recordings. There’s a difference in every show as well\, you never know what you’re going to get.” \n  \nYarn’s ability to persevere ought to come as no great surprise\, especially for a band that spent two years honing their chops during a Monday night residency at the famed Kenny’s Castaway in New York’s Greenwich Village. In effect\, it allowed them to rehearse onstage\, mostly in front of audiences that often ranged in size from five to a hundred people on any given night. 10 studio albums followed — Yarn (2007)\, Empty Pockets (2008)\, Leftovers Part One (2009)\, Come On In (2010)\, Leftovers Part 2 (2011)\, Almost Home (2012)\, Shine the Light On (2013)\, This Is The Year (2016)\, and Lucky 13 parts 1 & 2 (2019). The band then took to the road\, playing upwards of 170 shows a year and sharing stages with such superstars as Dwight Yoakam\, Charlie Daniels\,  Railroad Earth\, Marty Stuart\, Allison Krauss\, Leon Russell\, Jim Lauderdale\, Leftover Salmon\, Amos Lee\, The Lumineers and many more. They performed at any number of prestigious venues — Mountain Stage\, Daytrotter\, the Orange Peel in Asheville\, the Fox Theater in Boulder\, the 9:30 Club in D.C\, South by Southwest\, the Strawberry Festival\, Rhythm and Roots\, Meadowgrass\, Floydfest and so much more\, eventually surpassing 1\,000 shows\, half a million miles and performances in nearly every state. They’ve driven nonstop\, made countless radio station appearances\, driven broken-down RVs and watched as their van caught fire. They’ve paid their dues and then some\, looking forward even as they were forced to glance behind. \n  \nIndeed\, the accolades piled up quickly along the way. They have landed on the Grammy ballot 4 times\, garnered nods from the Americana Music Association\, placed top five on both Radio and Records and the AMA album charts\, garnered airplay on Sirius XM\, iTunes\, Pandora\, CNN\, and CMT\, been streamed millions of times on Spotify\, Apple Music\, and Amazon\, and also accorded the “Download of the Day” from Rolling Stone. Shine the Light On found shared songwriting credits with John Oates (the Oates of Hall & Oates fame)\, and when audiences expressed their admiration\, it brought the band a populist cult following of diehard devotees\, popularly known as “the Yarmy.” \n  \nIt’s proof positive that the Brooklyn and Raleigh based band have made their mark\, and in dealing with their emotions\, scars and circumstances\, they find themselves in a position to share those experiences with others who have juggled similar sentiments. \n  \nAs Yarn look forward to their next 2 studio releases in 2023\, Blake looks to establish himself more as the songwriter he’s always been\, and not the pseudo bluegrass band\, bar band or jam band\, that Yarn often gets immediately lumped into.  Although all those elements of music exist in the Yarn catalogue and their live performances\, Blake’s number one priority is and always has been “the song”.  These next 2 releases are without a doubt Blake’s most personal\, polished\, and best of Yarn’s career so far. \n  \nThe beginning of the journey to these 2 albums began around April of 2022 when Blake booked a solo show at The Down Home in Johnson City\, TN (a nod to Townes Van Zandt’s 1986 live show there and ultimate release) with the intention of making a live record.  But he wanted it to be songs none of the fans and attendees had ever heard before. The problem was he hadn’t written most of them yet.  He was at his crossroads\, uninspired\, bored\, exhausted and fairly insecure about his entire career up to that point.
