DESCRIPTION:The Cave presents \nThe Nighthawks \nSunday\, June 7\, 2026 $25.00 + Online Fee \n3pm Doors\, 4pm Showtime \n \n  \n \n  \nThe Nighthawks\n“Established 1972” \nVizzTone 2022\n“Established 1972” by The Nighthawks\,is an album that represents 50 years of Washington DC’s road warriors going strong. \nOn this landmark anniversary\, founder\, lead singer and harpmaster Mark Wenner is still at the helm\, while drummer Mark Stutso\,guitarist Dan Hovey and bassist Paul Pisciotta all share vocals and songwriting\, making this lineup one of the strongest ever. Decades of gigs and countless rabid fans have earned them the name “The Best Bar Band In The World.” More than a bar band or blues band\, as they’re frequently labeled\, this is a band that played with Carl Perkins in addition to Muddy Waters. \nIn March 2020\, with a brand-new recording to promote\, The Nighthawks did something previously unthinkable: They stopped in the middle of a Florida tour and drove home. Like so many other people\, the band members found themselves out of work as the coronavirus swept the country. Itching to play\, The Nighthawks found a couple of spaces large enough to stay apart while woodshedding new material. Previously\, the process had been a streamlined one: The band would rough out a dozen new tunes in an afternoon and perform them every night for a year or two before recording. But now there was time\, tons of it. Weeks turned into months. \nProduced by the Nighthawks and longtime compadre David Earl\, they took advantage of the pandemic slowdown to hunker down in Earl’s Severn Sound Studios in Annapolis\, Maryland and crank out fourteen new tracks in classic Nighthawks style. \nDan Hovey wrote a very relevant rocker\, “You Seem Distant.” Mark Stutso followed with a full blast “Coming and Going.” Florida friend Colin Kenny\, a.k.a. Raiford Starke\, wrote the soulful “West Memphis” and the band stylistically took it to Memphis. Stutso came up with “Gas Station Chicken” and everyone contributed to bringing in the funk. Hovey added three more: “Houseband\,” “Fuss and Fight\,” and the acoustic delight “Driving.” In between are British pub rock monster Gariant Watkins’ “Nobody”; Jimmy Reed’s “Take it Easy\,” featuring producer David Earl contributing the Eddie Taylor licks on guitar; Eddie Hinton’s version of Sam Cook’s “I’ll Come Running Back”; John Hammond’s version of Mose Allison’s “Ask Me Nice”; a wild version of the reggae classic “Johnny Too Bad”; an outtake rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Ain’t That Lovin’ You”; a Hillbilly interpretation of the Coasters’ “Run Red Run”; and half a dozen others that fell by the wayside. They’d play\, record\, rearrange\, and re-record til they got them just right. \nIn the tradition they set forth on Rock and Roll\, the band’s debut 1974 recording and mission statement\, the material is not bound by genre other than the widest range of American Roots Music.

A\nmechanic lies among the spare parts on the floor of his garage and wonders if he can\nafford to keep his girlfriend. A troubled man sees hallucinations of a black dog and a\nwandering boy and hums “Weird Al” songs in his head. These are some of the strange\nand richly drawn characters who inhabit James McMurtry’s eleventh album\, The Black\nDog & the Wandering Boy. A supremely insightful and inventive storyteller\, he teases\nvivid worlds out of small details\, setting them to arrangements that have the elements of\nAmericana—rolling guitars\, barroom harmonies\, traces of banjo and harmonica—but\nsound too sly and smart for such a general category. Funny and sad often in the same\nbreath\, the album adds a new chapter to a long career that has enjoyed a resurgence as\nyoung songwriters like Sarah Jarosz and Jason Isbell cite him as a formative influence. \nAs varied as they are\, these new story-songs find inspiration in scraps from his family’s\npast: a stray sketch\, an old poem by a family friend\, the hallucinations experienced by\nhis father\, the writer Larry McMurtry. “It’s something I do all the time\,” he says\, “but\nusually I draw from my own scraps.” As any good writer will do\, McMurtry collects little\nideas and hangs on to them for years\, sometimes even decades. “South Texas Lawman”\ngrew out of a line from a poem by a friend of the McMurtry clan\, T.D. Hobart. Driven by\ngravelly guitars and a loose rhythm section\, it’s a careful study of a man whose feelings\nof obsolescence motivate him to take drastic action in the final verse. “Dwight’d stay at\nour house way back in the ‘70s\, when we lived in Virginia. During one visit he wrote this\npoem about his father’s attitude toward South Texas. He wrote it down on cardboard\,\nand I came across it recently. There was a line about hunting quail on horseback\, and\nthat was the seed of the song. I’ve lost the poem since then.” \nThe rumbling title track\, a kind of squirrelly blues\, features two mysterious figures who\nappear only to those slipping from reality\, yet it’s never grim nor especially despairing.\nInstead\, McMurtry namechecks a “Weird Al” deep cut and depicts a tortured soul who\ndoesn’t have to work a nine-to-five. He finds a defiant humor in the situation at odds\nwith the gravity of the source material. “The title of the album and that song comes from\nmy stepmother\, Faye. After my dad passed\, she asked me if he ever talked to me about\nhis hallucinations. He’d gone into dementia for a while before he died\, but hadn’t\nmentioned to me anything about seeing things. She told me his favorite hallucinations \nwere the black dog and the wandering boy. I took them and applied them to a fictional\ncharacter.” \nSoon McMurtry had enough of these songs for a new record. “It happened like all my\nrecords happened. It’d been too long since I’d had a record that the press could write\nabout and get people to come out to my shows. It was time.” What was different this\ntime was the presence of his old friend Don Dixon\, who produced McMurtry’s third\nalbum\, Where You’d Hide the Body?\, back in 1995. “A couple of years ago I quit\nproducing myself. I felt like I was repeating myself methodologically and stylistically. I\nneeded to go back to producer school\, so I brought in CC Adcock for Complicated Game\,\nand then Ross Hogarth did The Horses & the Hounds. It seemed natural to revisit Mr.\nDixon’s homeroom. I wanted to learn some of what he’s learned over the last thirty\nyears.” During sessions at Wire Recording in Austin\, McMurtry observed firsthand\nDixon’s grasp of digital recording technology as well as his instinctual approach to\ntracking. “What Don’s really good at is being able to sense when it’s happening. He can\nhear when it’s going down. If I’m producing myself and I don’t have him\, I have to do\nthree takes and then go in and listen to them. Listening to those three takes can take\nabout 15 minutes. So Dixon’s ability to know when it’s happening is crucial\, because it\ncan cut 15 minutes out of the day. That can really save a session\, because you only have\nso many hours in the day and only so much energy.\nWorking with McMurtry’s trusted backing band—Cornbread on bass\, Tim Holt on\nguitar\, Daren Hess on drums\, BettySoo on backing vocals—they worked to create\nsomething that sounds spontaneous\, as though he’s writing the songs as you hear them.\nThey were open to odd experiments\, weird whims\, and happy accidents\, such as the\ncover of Jon Dee Graham’s “Laredo” that opens the album. It’s an opioid blues:\ntestimony from a part-time junkie losing a weekend to dope. “We were playing a benefit\nfor Jon Dee at the Hole in the Wall there in Austin\, and we thought it’d be good if we\nplayed one of his songs. We rehearsed the song in the studio\, and it sounded good. The\ndrums were ready. We’d already got the sounds up. Might as well record it.” \n“Laredo” is one of a pair of covers that bookend The Black Dog & the Wandering Boy\,\nthe other being Kris Kristofferson’s “Broken Freedom Song.” “I did that one a few weeks\nafter our initial sessions. It was just me and BettySoo\, then we added drums and bass\nlater on. Kris had just passed not too long before we recorded it. I guess that’s why I was\nthinking about him.” Like Hobart’s poem\, it’s a bit of inspiration excavated from deep\nwithin his own life. “Kris was one of my major influences as a child. He was the first\nperson that I recognized as a songwriter. I hadn’t really thought about where songs\ncame from\, but I started listening to Kristofferson as a songwriter and thinking\, How do\nyou do this? He was actually the second concert I saw. I was nine. He and the band were \nhaving such a good time\, and that really solidified for me that this was what I wanted to\ndo with my life.” \nOnce the album was mixed\, mastered\, and sequenced\, McMurtry recalled a rough pencil\nsketch he had found a few years earlier in his father’s effects. It seemed like it might\nmake a good cover. “I knew it was of me\, but I didn’t realize who drew it. I asked my\nmom and my stepdad\, and finally I asked my stepmom\, Faye\, who said it looked like\nKen Kesey’s work back in the ‘60s. She was married to Ken for forty years.” The Merry\nPrankster’s—Kesey’s roving band of hippie activists and creators—stopped by often to\nvisit Larry McMurtry and his family. “I don’t remember their first visit\, the one\ndocumented in Tom Wolfe’s Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. I was too young\, but I do\nremember a couple of Ken’s visits. I guess he drew it on one of those later stops. I\nremembered it and thought it would be the perfect art\, but I had to go back through the\nstorage locker. It’s a miracle that I found it again.”\nIt’s a fitting image for an album that scavenges personal history for inspiration. Even the\nsongwriter himself doesn’t always know what will happen or where the songs will take\nhim. “You follow the words where they lead. If you can get a character\, maybe you can\nget a story. If you can set it to a verse-chorus structure\, maybe you can get a song. A\nsong can come from anywhere\, but the main inspiration is fear. Specifically\, fear of\nirrelevance. If you don’t have songs\, you don’t have a record. If you don’t have a record\,\nyou don’t have a tour. You gotta keep putting out work.”

DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presents \nPatrick Sweany \nSunday\, July 12\, 2026 $20.00 + Online Fee \n2pm Doors\, 4pm Showtime \n \n  \n \nPATRICK SWEANY – BABY\, IT’S LATEThe title of Patrick Sweany’s new record is apt for more reasons than might be readily apparent. \nFor fans\, it’s a nod to the massive amount of time between full-length albums (7 years if you are counting). For Sweany\, it’s a theme that’s permeated his latest songs (running out of time\, getting older).  \nThe time in between 2018’s Ancient Noiseand Baby\, It’s Latehas been full of changes for Sweany. Difficult changes. These mile-markers and their aftermath made it challenging for Sweany to do what he’s done for over 20 years: write songs\, record songs\, get in a van and play those songs for you. \nIt wasn’t as though Sweany’s music-making simply stopped\, however. As the world opened back up after the pandemic\, Sweany resumed his Blue Monday residency at The 5 Spot in E. Nashville playing 50’s and 60’s era Blues songs with The Tiger Beats: McKinley James\, Jason Smay\, and Ted Pecchio. He also started a new Soul\, Funk project called SUPER FELONwith JD Simo\, Adam Abrashoff\, Pecchioand Robbie Crowell. Most importantly\, he started writing and recording again. \nFor the first time\, Sweany chose to do almost everything himself\, recording tracks on his Tascam 388 tape machine in his Bongo Room home studio. While the end results were not quite good enough for public consumption\, the kernels of some great new songs were started\, and a less polished\, more organic approach was established.  \nSweany decided to call on the collaborators in The Tiger Beats and SUPER FELON to help him progress. Using JD Simo’s House Of Greasestudio and McKinley James’ Red Lodgestudio\, Sweany brought in players from both of these projects. \n“These guys are some of the most in-demand players in Nashville\,” says Sweany about the sessions. “They know when it’s right and when it’s not. If they felt like these songs weren’t good enough\, they’d tell me. \n”“We tracked two days live\, no headphones\, band in the room\, old school style. It felt good. It felt right. The songs sounded like songs.Back in the saddle.”  \nOn top of the old-school style of recording\, Sweany chose to produce the recordings himself – something he’d never done \nThe results are a raw\, more direct collection of songs that tap directly into the pain\, tension\, and catharsis of the past seven years. Stylistically they capture elements of Sweany’s previous recordings: the raw Blues-Rock opener “My Time Ain’t Long”could be an outtake from 2008’s Every Hour Is A Dollar Gone\, while the subtle ballads “Christmas Parade”and “See Through”are reminiscent of 2015’s ruminative Daytime Turned To Nighttime. Elsewhere\, however\, Sweany embraces some new influences such as the hooky rock anthem “Golden Fields”and the 70s organ funk groove of “Trouble With Love.” \nAfter over 25 years writing\, recording and touring\, Sweany knows more than most that you can’t rush the process. You have to wait until the songs are ready. In that regard\, Baby\, It’s Never Too Late.

His major label debut\,\n1991’s Planet of Love\, opened the door to international touring and established him\nas an A-list songwriter on Music Row. His songs have been recorded by George\nStrait\, Patty Loveless\, George Jones\, the Chicks\, Old Crow Medicine Show\,\nLucinda Williams\, Charley Crockett\, Dave Edmunds\, Solomon Burke\, and many\nothers. Between 2004 and 2013\, Lauderdale wrote and recorded six albums with\nGrateful Dead songwriter Robert Hunter. His many other collaborators include\nBuddy Miller\, Elvis Costello\, Donna the Buffalo\, North Mississippi Allstars\, Po’\nRamblin’ Boys\, and Ralph Stanley. Chambers and her brother\, Nash\, provide harmonies on Sweeney’s track. From a young boy learning the craft of music by ear\, to becoming a Grammy-winning artist\, he continues to make his mark on the world stage. With his band and his son by his side\, he is ensuring that zydeco music will continue to inspire and uplift audiences for generations to come. Buckwheat Zydeco Jr. was born into a musical family in Lafayette\, Louisiana\, a city deeply rooted in the sounds of zydeco and Creole culture. His father\, Stanley “Buckwheat” Dural\, Sr.\, was a legendary figure in zydeco music\, and Buckwheat\, Jr. was immersed in music from a young age. \n\nFollowing the death of his father in 2016\, Buckwheat Zydeco Jr. assumed the mantle of his father’s musical legacy\, continuing to lead the Ils Sont Partis Band. This band\, which was originally formed by Stanley Dural\, Sr.\, is a tribute to the vibrant tradition of zydeco and remains a vital force in spreading the genre’s infectious rhythms worldwide. Buckwheat\, Jr. now performs with his father’s iconic custom monogrammed accordion and shares the stage with his son\, Kyle Anthony Dural\, who plays the rubboard. This family connection is deeply meaningful to Buckwheat\, Jr.\, who reflects\, “Everywhere I go\, my son is on my right. It really is a blessing.”\nBuckwheat Zydeco Jr.’s career has been marked by significant milestones\, both alongside his father and as a solo artist. He shared the stage with some of the most renowned figures in music\, including Eric Clapton\, Paul Simon\, Willie Nelson\, Mavis Staples\, Albert Collins\, Buddy Guy\, Dwight Yoakam\, and Los Lobos\, to name a few. Buckwheat Zydeco Jr. and The Ils Sont Partis Band won the 2024 Best Regional Roots Music Album – New Beginnings award at the 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards\, and also in 2024 got inducted at the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.\n\n\nMiller and The Other Sinners is a nationally touring Southern Soul band from Buffalo\, NY\, bringing a blend of gut bucket delta grit\, memphis soul\, gospel spirit and funky rhythm and blues. Since August of 2015\, they have performed over 700 shows across 21 states and Canada from house parties to festivals. They have an unforgettable show filled with infectious grooves and tremendous musicianship all supporting well written songs that really connect. \n\nDavid Michael Miller\, founder\, lead vocalist\, guitarist and songwriter for Miller and The Other Sinners\, is a well established musician in the Western New York music scene\, for 6 years fronting the band\, Dive House Union. David has shared the stage with artists such as Tedeschi Trucks Band\, Steve Miller Band\, Joe Bonamassa\, Jonny Lang\, Gary Clark Jr.\, Bobby Blue Bland\, Jimmie Vaughan\, Shemekia Copeland\, Eric Gales and many others.\n  \nSince 2007 The Big Easy in Buffalo has brought New Orleans and Louisiana music and culture to the Western New York region several times a year for free and low-cost live performance\, as well as music education and mentoring for local musicians\, students\, and the community. Through The Big Easy in Buffalo thousands of students\, dozens of local bands\, and countless audience members in Western New York have been exposed to this unique American culture.
