The Black Lillies

Born in the rumbling cab of a stone truck and aged in Tennessee’s smoky nighttime haunts, The Black Lillies have quickly risen to the forefront of the Americana scene while being embraced by other genres as well.

Founded by multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Cruz Contreras, The Black Lillies have created their own unique brand of country, roots, rock and blues via Appalachia. Formed in 2008, the group also includes electric guitar and pedal steel whiz Tom Pryor and drummer Jamie Cook, both formerly of the everybodyfields, bassist Robert Richards, and vocalist Trisha Gene Brady.

Their 2009 debut, Whiskey Angel, received rave reviews as it shot to the top of multiple “Best of 2009″ lists across the country and also won the Independent Music Award that year for Best Americana Album. In 2011 the follow-up, 100 Miles of Wreckage, spent more than five months on the Americana radio chart in the top 20, once again proving that they can break through traditional industry boundaries and achieve success without the constraints of a major label.

Recent highlight performances include Bonnaroo, Pickathon, CMA Music Fest, Americana Music Festival, Four Corners Folk Festival, Bristol Rhythm & Roots, Folk Alliance, Mountain Stage and multiple appearances on the Grand Ole Opry.

“100 Years of Wreckage is a stunningly crafted and often inspired tour through country, bluegrass, folk,

blues, and soft rock that largely ignores genre distinction in favor of top-notch performances and understated professionalism.”

Metro Pulse

“The instruments that carry The Black Lillies along ‘100 Miles of Wreckage’ are driven with top-notch playing. Fingers are flying on strings, every note clear and clean. Cruz Contreras’ voice

comes through like a high gloss polish, offering so much attention to detail that you can see yourself inside the words. Aiding his delivery is that ‘guy next door’ warmth that glows in the vocals”

The Alternate Root

“The band, being neither mainstream nor truly traditional, might at first glance seem an unorthodox choice for

the Grand Ole Opry, but the many strains of vintage country that collide in this rising band’s sound make the Lillies a crossbreed to watch.”
