12th ANNUAL FEMALE MUSICIANS FIGHTING BREAST CANCER BENEFIT
(Buffalo, NY) It‘s been 13 consecutive years, since Ida Goeckel, a local female bass
player, and now two time breast cancer survivor, founded and organized the first annual
Female Musicians Fighting Breast Cancer Benefit. The 13th Annual Female
Musicians Fighting Breast Cancer benefit is once again set to raise awareness and funds
for
the WNY Breast Resource Center, the go-to support and information center on the
grounds of Roswell Park Cancer Institute. It is where patients and their support network
can learn to make informed choices and become better equipped to explore their
treatment options.
The event will occur on Sunday October 25th, 2015 at The Sportsmen’s Tavern at 326
Amherst St., Buffalo, N.Y. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. with four
local acts, featuring female members, donating their talent to perform from 2:00
p.m.-7:00.p.m. This year we are again proud to support homebred WNY
original musicians! It promises to be another fine gathering of some of the best live
entertainment you will see/hear anywhere.
Gracing the stage (there’s pun coming up) this year for the first time at this event will be:
the words and wisdom of The Pure Ink and Pulse Poetry poets, veteran blues mama, Donna
Rose and Hot Blue Mix, and the up and coming guitar sensation, Grace Lougen and her
Band.
Our headliner this year, back from her supporting world tour with Joan Baez, is our own
Grace
Stumberg!!! This is Grace’s reprise performance at this benefit.
Prizes generously donated by local and national merchants will be raffled off
throughout the show, as well as 50/50 splits run twice throughout the show. Admission
to witness all this talent under one roof will be just $10.00. There will be a
cash bar and the fine food at the venue to enhance the experience.
This fundraiser, sanctioned by the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation and Team
Cure, donates 100% of the proceeds to Roswell Park’s WNY Breast Resource
Center located at Elm and Carlton St. in Buffalo, N.Y. It is the original music benefit to
raise Breast Cancer Awareness and has spawned similar events locally. The mission of
this
benefit is dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and empowerment of breast cancer
patients.
Statistics now indicate that the older you get, the greater your risk for developing breast
cancer. Chances increase from 1 in 233 for women up through their 30’s to 1 in 8 up
through age 85+. A smaller number of men are at risk as well. It is also the fifth leading
cause of death in US women ( heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and respiratory disease
exceed breast cancer).
Approximately 40,000 women die each year from breast cancer. Many strides and
advances have been made in both the early detection and subsequent treatment for breast
cancer patients. Continued studies and research, just within the last 10-12 years, have
greatly reduced the risk of recurrence and have given thousands of women and men
diagnosed with breast cancer new hope for a bright future.
Looking at the most recent cancer data released by the New York State Cancer Registry
and the CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries (2006-10), it appears that some
counties in the Western New York area have higher-than-average breast cancer
incidence rates when compared to the rest of New York State and the country.
In Erie and Niagara Counties, respectively, 139.4 and 138.0 cases of breast cancer were
diagnosed per year, per 100,000 women. The statewide average is 127.7 while the U.S.
average is 119.8.
The good news, however, is that breast cancer death rates are either stable or falling in
every WNY county, as it is in New York State and the entire country.
In recent years, there’s been an explosion of life-saving treatment advances against breast
cancer, bringing new hope and excitement. Instead of only one or two options, today
there’s an overwhelming menu of treatment choices that fight the complex mix of cells in
each individual cancer. The decisions — surgery, then perhaps radiation, hormonal
(anti-estrogen) therapy, and/or chemotherapy — can feel overwhelming.
With greater concentration on pinpointing its cause and developing a cure through
research, perhaps the next generation will no longer needlessly have to be concerned
about
the risk of breast cancer.
In the meantime, it is important that those who have been diagnosed receive the
compassionate care and treatment that Roswell has to offer at its Breast Care Clinic, as
well as arm themselves with the available up-to-date information at Roswell‘s WNY
Breast Resource Center. The entire community is invited to support this worthy
cause. For further information contact the F.M.F.B.C. benefit founder and organizer, Ms.
